DAZ Studio Character Creation And License Question

Hi,

I'm about to create my first game using Unity and I've been looking into the best way to create the characters that I have in my imagination. I have been looking for quite a while where to buy or create the characters that I need with little luck. Someone highly recommended DAZ Studio but I'm a bit confused about the licensing and costs. I looked at the Indie License but it says that I can only use Daz Original models only.

Does this mean that I can design my own characters, but I can't actually use them in my game? And if I do purchase an original model, will that mean that I can't alter the body or face features?

Various content creators have their own 'view' on 3d game content.

Daz originals have indie and 'pro' lic.

Some other producers also offer indie and or pro lic. price is usually dependant on the amount of models it covers.

Some creators do not offer 3d lic.  in this case, do not use thier stuff for that.

    what is the bottom line.

creating a 3d game using OTHER PEOPLES STUFF will cost you a small fortune.

Consider creating your own stuff or just stick with Daz originals and modify what you need.

IF you have really deep pockets, go for it.

how deep ?   ok, I will use myself as an example

I am working a comic series, so I get to use the cheapest version of the models because I only work (currently) in 2D

so that should be cheap right?  If you call over a THOUSAND $ cheap. and 3d lic. are much more expensive.

    how can that be ?

If this is your first time trying to make a game, I will guess you will under estimate the number of

models you need by a factor of 10.  I had a good idea what I needed and I was short by a factor of 3.

Am I trying to scare you ? nope

But I did want to warn you ' how deep the pool is that your jumping into'

    Good luck with the project

No, it means you can't use items from the store that don't list Daz 3D as a vendor. If they do list Daz 3D, or if they are your own work (from scratch or from an item listing Daz 3D as a vendor) you can use them.

Yes, you certainly can create original characters just using DAZ Originals content with a DAZ Originals content Indie Game Develop License.

Example, I made using DAZ Originals products, although not out of my own imagination:

If are a member of the Platinum Club + (PC+) for one year being a new comer is an advantage. It doesn't have to cost a small fortune. You can get want you need for your game if you design it in advance and are strict with your art requirements for less than $500.

Of course like me and others you can collect lots of DAZ products as a hobby and that can run into a few thousand so that is expensive but in line with other 'cheap' hobbies and cheaper than many hobbies.

good point, if you need a bunch of  'set piece' models  ..like lamps, plants, regular furniture and such,

PC+ subscription can save you some serious money.

    Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I've created pretty much everything in Maya for landscape, houses, furniture etc (Or downloaded some for free in regards to plants and flowers). However, the creation of the characters are a weakness of mine, so I didn't want to have to create them in that program. I'm happy to create in Daz from scratch, as long as it's easier than Maya. It was just using those characters in my game that I wanted to check into the licensing for.

And no, I don't have a massive budget. It's practically nothing, hence why I've created most of it in Maya. It is just me doing the entire game, so it'll take me a year or so. I'm alright with that. I'd like to create some beautiful looking characters though. Is it difficult to design using Daz Studio?

So, if I do buy some Daz originals and modify, I'll have to get that Indie license. If I create from scratch do I need a license? I'll look into the Platinum Club.

    Thanks!

It is easy to modify DAZ original characters to fit your own needs which would be covered under the license.  However, DS isn't really a creation too. Most, if not all, figures are modeled in a different program and then imported into DS to be rigged.  With the right tools, though, you can modify figures to be almost anything you need.
