Question About Billboard Nodes

Is it possible to put other characters on the billboard nodes? The ones shown on the product page are great, but they only work for "here and now" images. If one wants to use them to populate a scene with characters from another era or culture, or even sci-fi or fantasy, is it possible to put our own characters into a scene using these billboard nodes?

If so, how is that done? I think this is a great way to put a large number of characters into a scene without putting my computer into a coma.
