scene black

I'm trying to pose my character but the scene is almost completely black, on a black background. The only way to see anything is to set it to hidden line, and then still half the lines are black.

Try turning Preview Lights off, in the Window menu (or cmd/ctrl L). The wireframe colours reflect the basic diffuse colour of the model, so it sounds as if the base is black (or very dark) - you can chnage that in the Surfaces pane.
