Disabling DAZ Connect

I do most of my animation work inside of Carrara - and according to DAZ documentation, anything installed with DAZ Connect will NOT be accessible by Carrara.

Is that still the case?

And if so, is there a way for me to completely disable DAZ Connect so I don't inadvertently make certain items inaccessible in Carrara?

Is there a way to identify content I've already installed via DAZ Connect so I can reinstall that through DAZ Install Manager and use in Carrara?

Thanks

I don't use DAZ Connect, so I can't help with the final question. But to avoid using it, just don't ever log in inside DAZ Studio. Logging in is one of the first things you're invited to do, but there's a an option button to use DS offline. Check that and close the store pane, and you won't risk ever using DAZ Connect to buy new stuff.

When I started with DS on my laptop, I originally logged in and had DAZ Connect running, but I had constant startup issues with messages about failing to connect to the CMS. Rightly or wrongly, I blamed that on DAZ Connect and logged out, and I've never used it since. And on my new rendering computer, I just never logged in. No problems at all there.

Right, don't log in from inside DS or isntall content from Smart Content or the Install pane.

Speaking as someone who's finally updated to the latest shiny from D|S4.8, will that also prevent Connect from thinking something that's installed isn't, and insisting on stealth-installing it anyway? I've seen too many aaaiiieee-mails on the subject posted here for comfort. I know it's supposed to be a "shouldn't happen" problem, but...

  • Is there a way to tell what I've already installed via Connect?

Is there a way to uninstall that and then reinstall via DIM so I can use those products inside of Carrara?

I have come across many items that i'll try to load in Carrara only to get a message like 'the .cr2 for xxx figure won't load properly' or 'unable to load .cr2 for xxx figure'  and no explanation beyond that.  No idea if those had been installed via Connect or if some other problem messing them up in Carrara - and not sure how to find out.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Another question - I'm inside of DAZ Studio now, looking at GIS Skyway Expansion

The item is grayed out and has right click for options or double click to install.

If I double click to install, is that using Connect?  (which would mean I can no longer use that product inside of Carrara where i do my animating)

If I don't install by double clicking, how can I use the product?

When I look in my DAZ Install Manager, it shows GUS Skyway Expansion as already installed.

Thanks for any clarification on this.

(my preference would be to use DIM to install everything, because the content becomes of little use to me if I can't use in Carrara -and documentation notes that anything installed with Connect cannot be used in Carrara)

In DIM, if you isntalled the default filters, the magnifying glass to the left of the fliter text box should have a tags sub menu with Connect installed as one of the options. For items that have not yet been downloaded you do also need to have Connect installed checked in the download Filters dialogue.

Yes, that would be installing via Connect - if items installed via DIM are not showing as installed in DS that would indicate an issue with the database or communication between DIM and the CMS or DS and the CMS.

  • Without any filters, DIM shows 5914 Installed Files

With 'Not Connect installed' it shows 4003 Files Installed

With 'Connect Installed' it shows 75 files

    Not sure if that's a problem (am i missing a bunch of files since 4003 + 75 = 4078 (rather than 5914)

Can I simply uninstall those 75 'Connect Installed' files, then Reinstall with DIM?

If I find grayed out files in DAZ, do I need to note all of those down, then uninstall and Reinstall?

Not sure how to troubleshoot potential database or communication problem between DIM and CMS or DS and CMS.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Maybe "Not Connect Installed" show only those items which could be installed via Connect but aren't, rather than all items. Theer is a Connect Available filter, I think - see if that shows 4,078 items.

Yes, uninstalling the items installed via Connect and then reinstalling via DIM would work (though note if you have any encrypted content you won't be able to isntall via DIM until a year from its initial release).

The troubleshooting Smart Content entry in the Help Centre seems rather old. One thing to check, especially if you have ever run DS As Adminsitrator (not just from an Adminstrator account but actually right-click and run as Administrator), is the permissions on the C:\Users\YOU\AppData\Roaming\Daz 3D\cms\Content Cluster folder.

  • I did the uninstall - reinstall.

but I still have lots of files that show up in DAZ Studio which are greyed out (indicating need to install via connect) even though they show up as already installed via DIM.

(for instance, 3d Bison shows as installed under DIM but is greyed out in DAZ studio - and there are numerous files like this)

Can you acces them through the Content Library pane?

  • Not sure if this is a new issue - but I had been installing my content into an external drive (H:) - but when I just rechecked my settings in DIM, I noticed the path had been set back to another hard drive (D:) - not sure if I inadvertently changed this at some point, or if it defaulted back to this if the external drive went off during a blackout - but I now have two separate My DAZ 3D library folders (one on D: (83.2GB) and one on H: (163,2GB Runtime)

If I simply delete the My DAZ 3D library from D: will DIM be able to figure out which products need to be reinstalled?

Is there some other method I should try to remove this partial duplicate set of installs?  (I see lots of overlap if I simply skim through the directories on the two drives, but they're obviously not identical)

Any suggestions to prevent this from happening in the future? (I've already reset the path in DIM to desired H: location)

Could this be related to why I have so many items inside of Studio that are showing up as Installed under DIM but are not accessible via Studio (they are greyed out an d prompting me to double click to install via connect - which I don't want to do because I want all of my content accessible to Carrara 8.5 Pro.

Very frustrating - thanks for any help / suggestions.

DIM does keep a record of wheer files were installed, but you can tell it to install to the current target location (instead of the original) when adding updates so you could simply merge the two folders. The only issue, with updates, would be where a file from the old version is removed and not replaced.

  • Ok - I merged those folders - had DAZ rescan my folders (and removed some extra runtimes) -

Now most of my DAZ Content is showing up both as an installed version (which i can access and use normally within DAZ )

There are some files still greyed out and unaccessable (such as Aged for M4).  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling in DIM, then rescanning directories within DAZ Studio, but still can't access and don't want to install via Connect.  Any suggestions?

Do the files show up in Content Library > Poser Formats > [content library name] > Pose > DAZ's Michael 4 > Morph Injections?

  • Hey @fixmypcmike - thanks for the suggestion.  Started poking around in that area and found the files after searching another thread with problems on Aged for M4:

    H:\My DAZ 3D Library\Runtime\Libraries\Pose\DAZ's Michael 4\Morph Injections\Aged for M4

Those files show up as installed (not greyed out) so should be able to use them.
