DS crashes when rendering Nvidia driver.

I'm at my wit's end with one machine that keeps crashing when rendering. Sometimes it renders and I save then crashes. I can live with that. But other times it spends an hour rendering then crashes before I can save the output. It is always an Nvidia driver causing the fault.
I posted on the Nvidia support forum a month ago and not a single response so I guess their forum is useless.
If someone here has a clue I will post the APPCRASH details. I cannot make any sense of those myself.
If no one replies or has an idea I'm not going to waste time posting a lot of extended info here.
I will offer the basics:

I have totally removed and reinstalled Nvidia drivers as well. No help.

You're on WinXP-64bit, right? What's the driver version?
No Win 7 Home Premium.
I did some experimenting and turned off CPU in Nvidia render settings and the problem seems to have stopped. Then I did a test with CPU only and turned off Nvidia GPU and render times don't seem to change much and problem stopped. Seems if I have both GPU and CPU checked on this machine I get crashes. ( Latest driver version because I just downloaded that and did a clean install )
On my Xeon machine ( exact same GT730 card and driver no problems ) It has 48GB RAM vs. the i7's 16GB but no onboard video.
