Rendering Mirrors

In the "Cross Examining Room (21557) the creator shows a mioor on the wall.  How does one get the mirror to show on a render?

Are yiou using Iray or 3delight to render (assuming this si Daz Studio)?

  • I am using Iray in Daz Studio (newest)

  • Is there a read me or book that I can purchase about using shaders?

try clicking on the mirror area with the Surfae selection tool and then from the Shader presets>Iray>Uber tru one of the Metal sahders - Aluminium Polished or Silver perhaps.

After selecting the metal you want, if you don't have a reflection to your liking, then you can turn up the glossy reflectivity setting in the material settings for the mirror.

Personally, I like using the titanium Iray uber shader for mirrors.

The guide I found via Google talked about the Nickel shader (it comes with the Age of Armor stuff that comes free with Daz), so that's the one I've been using.  Then bumping reflectivity up a lot, but just shy of 100% if I remember right (I have the instructions somewhere...).

I think these are the instructions I'm referring to (via the helpdaz,zendesk.com site), but the reflectivity just shy of 1.0 is something I picked up from some other help guide/forum thread.

    If you are using Iray...
    1. Apply the Nickel Shader to the mirror surface
    2. Change Glossy Reflectivity to 1.0
    3. Change Glossy Roughness to 0.01

This should reflect like a mirror.

If you are using 3Delight, let me know and I'll give you direction there.

    Thanks,
    Crissie

There's also this free mirror shader on ShareCG...

Note that the mirrors on the bike in the render below are showing the sky and part of the helmet in the RH Mirror.

Age of Armor's shaders are for 3Delight, you need to use IrayUber metal shader as the default render engine is set to Iray.

In addition to making sure you have an Iray metal shader, remember that you need something to reflect. An empty scene other than your character has nothing to reflect. Iray will reflect an HDRi image, even if you've set the Draw Dome to off. Or if your mirror is part of a scene, you need to be sure that whatever portion is in in the mirror is adequately lit.
