Quick question about using the d-former on clothing

DDCreateDDCreate Posts: 1,404

I have toyed with this a little bit and have a tutorial on it that, after I finally understood what was happening, seemed to work pretty well. Not there was anything wrong with the tutorial, I just had to get familiar with the d-former tool itself. The effect I was hoping for was to pull the fabric out under the arm to create a "gun bulge." I know that will take some time and I'll have to work on a few areas but what my problem was is this. When I finally got the clothing to move, it looked like I had put a single thread through cloth and pulled on it. Which made more of a "peak" I guess. The clothing area had a tip on it. I apologize for not having a screen shot. I'm just hoping some people that have used this tool a lot will know what I mean. Anyway...is there a way to maybe scale up the d-former to affect the area in a more rounded way? So instead of it looking like I'm pulling a thread, it loks like there is a ball under the cloth? Am I making sense? If not I will do a screen shot asap. Hope someone can help.

Thanks!

Make the Field bigger. You can also, from the DForm pane, edit the spline that controls how the effect drops from the centre of the field to the outer edge. Another option would be to use a weight map instead of the field - does the tutorial go into that at all? Do bear in mind that the dForm, and other methods of manipulating the mesh, are limited to the vertices that define it - you can't pull where there isn't a vertex, and you can't act on the virtual vertices created by SubD.

Thanks Richard. No I don't believe there was any info on using weight maps. That's a new term to me. After my post I realized a better way to describe what I'm trying to do would be close to how a sphere would look then covered by a piece of cloth. If that helps you to know which method would be best for me to use.

I think that would be best done by enlarging the field to include more of the model, and then editing the spline (the graph you see in the edit dialogue is the profile of a plane being pulled up by the dForm).

Okay then. I'll give that a spin when I get home and hopefully I can figure it out. Or at least come up with a screen shot for someone to maybe see where I'm going wrong. Thanks for the replies Richard :)
