  • Oh, and Smart Content also works fine. Seems that just Userdata is incompatible.

  • fixmypcmikefixmypcmike Posts: 19,583

If you're just re-importing the userdata it won't show much in the progress window, as each userdata file has a lot of information, and the progress bar is just based on how many userdata files have finished.  Just let it run -- depending on your system specs it could take quite a while to finish.

Did you upgrade to PostgreSQL before updating to 4.9 or afterwards?  If you did it before, did your categories in 4.6 look correct after upgrading?

  • I did it after... It seems I have about 10% back after another Meta Data import. I'm going to keep trying, though it makes little sense. At least there seems to be some progress :)

  • TotteTotte Posts: 13,960

My guess is that it has to do with 4.6 -> 4.9 and that the CMS has undergone many changesbut it should work, it really should, but it might be several steps where you start DS, and and then exit it and start it again , I know DS does stuff in the database upon startup.

  • Ok, so after several re-imports I seem to have it all back... with many other categories I did not create. Weird. I guess the transfer isn't quite perfected yet! At least I did not lose all those weeks of work. Now just to delete the random ones...

  • fixmypcmikefixmypcmike Posts: 19,583

What are some of the random categories?  Are your custom categories under Default or outside of Default?

  • Mine are outside default. Randoms include the HFS Space System (each subsection has created its own Category), Horse Armor, Mystery Cave etc. I have all these categorized already in other places. They weren't ever in the root Categories. Not too many, now that I've done a thorough check.

Hi. I've just installed DazStudio 4.9. I wanted to learn through official tutorials, but met substantial performance problem.

The scene works really slow, everything happens with big delay when I try to move camera around. And I just put Genesis 3 Model there, Dark Storm outfit and hair - as shown in tutorial. But in tutorial everything moves nice and smooth.

I'm completely new with 3D software, maybe I just didn't check the right option somewhere?

    Tech. specs:

    Intel Core i7 2,4 GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1GB, 256GB SSD

Is it "Display Optimization"? Tried it. Doesn't solve the problem, unfortunately.

Hi guys, I will be getting a new iMac soon, can one of you boffins please tell me what I need to be getting in order to get the best and fastest results from Iray Daz Studion renders please?

As far as I am aware no current mac has nVidia GPUs, so you will be limited to CPU rendering for Iray - unless you get an add-on box that will house a specially treated nVidia card, which as far as I know will need a Lighting connector.

I would be willing to give this a try if iI would get enough power/speed from doing this. Have you ever seen this done successfully yourself?

Well the one I am on is a an early 2009 20in iMac. Could I not bump this up to the specs I need and just use this and the grunt machines?

There is ways using thunderbolt expansion bays (I haven't tried that though), but on the MacPro you can install real nVidia Cards. But look up the expansion bays for thunderbolt.

  • EamonEamon Posts: 159

I will look into that Totte but can you please tell me what are the general Mac requirements for DazStudio using Iray please?

It looks like I can get a MacPro 2011 for about £400 so I could potentially power up the hell out of that can't i? like 32 GB ram and extra graphics cards? Just use that then for this work.

  • EamonEamon Posts: 159

Ok after doing proper reseach now, it does seem this Iray is geared towards folks who make a lot of money and can afford a crazy high spec computor for their studio. I make an ok living with my illustration work but I don't earn quite enough to get a 4k Mac Pro.

I have looked at MacPro towers but they may not go past El Capitan.

I am getting a hefty paycheck soon but as anybody who is self employed will tell you, you tend to not want to spend too much should there be a drop in work. But then the new MacPros don't use Invidia.

As a book cover illustrator, it's amazingly frustrating knowing I can get far more realistic renders but I'll need to donate  vital parts of my anatomy to fund it.

  • One option might be to get a Windows system purely as a render box, using your iMac for everything else. It obviously depends on how you feel about running a mixed system, and how much sapce you have for computers, but it's a solution at least some people have adopted.

@Eamon: The built in nVida chips in most macs are just too weak. I got myself a GTX-780 6GB plus an GTX 750ti 2GB (to drive the screen), but the best to find a Mac Pro with a GT-120 card for the screen as it is hjas EFI boot-ROMs so you get a screen during boot.

I haven't gone beyond 10.11 myself (I updated my main system to 10.11 this weekend as I needed XCode 8 for swift 3 (that's an MacPro 2014 witrh AMD cards and no nVidia, no good for Iray).

A Refurbished MacPro 2011 or 2012 with 32-48GB RAM and a fat 4TB disk for content (or two, raided) and a 512GB SSD as boot drive is a good start. Rememeber that MacPros do have powerful powersupplys in the 900-1100W range so throwing in an nVidia 980TI is doable, but they do cost (and thats the same price as windows machines (same cards, jiust be careful to check that the card has the correct video out, displayport is important to make it work in a Mac, or the nVidia driver just wiont enable it (happend to me, a GTYX750Ti lacking one of the ports and the driver just ignored the card.

For an extra ~$250 one can create an external Thunderbolt GPU. I based mine on the Akitio Thunder 2. The thunder case isn't big enough for a GPU, and you need an additional PC power supply to to power the rig. There's a script on github which installs and modifies the Nvidia web driver.

I built one as an experiment, and it works, but the result isn't necessarily the prettiest. Also, probably not a project for the faint of heart.

Thanks. The frame will take a second riser and video card facing the opposite direction giving you two GPUs either daisy chained or on separate Thunderbolt ports. If I should decide to buy my next desktop at some point, it'll probably be an iMac rather than a "trash can." In the meantime, this works fine with my MacBook Pro.

Oh lads, I am no where near that brave or tech savy. I am on an iMac after all.

But that External Thunderbolt GPU, are you using that with a Mac?

Hi dear friend..To run Iray renders fast and succefully you need a lot of money... It needs at least 2 video cards as i see (titanX class) and lot of cooling (: thing that you can do only with pc tower..but with what OS?  I wish we had again Windows XP with the ability to recognize infinity ram...

New Macs pro are not able to do because they dont have nvidia...i have seen friends with mac cylinders not able to run fast iray...

only option as Totte said is alu towers..but for how long....

Also Richard Haseltine wrote many useful things...

imac can take external GPU but not expect amazing difference... (:

and what imac model? i know only one imac with nvidia inbult nvidia... late 2013... which have cooling problems when using it at heavy renders...

Anyway...it's a mess ..im in same situation..

at the moment i dropped at my old imac with 3d delight...but is not bad.

And when someone really knows to use 3d delight you can do miracles.

I keep getting asked "osascript wants to make changes" if I hit cancel it just keeps popping up, I don't want to enter my password incase it's something dodgy.  But currently my install is at a standstill with basic products waiting to install and only the lessons installed.

Any ideas what this osascript is and if it's safe

What are you installing - the Install Manager, Daz Studio or something else?

If you are installing DAZ Studio through Install Manager and as DIM (DAZ Install Manager) needs authentication to install Studio, and other things that goes into /Applications.
If you install DIM from BitRock-Installer, you need to allow it to make the install
If you are installing DAZ Studio througha BitRock installer, don't Install DIM and go from there.

Hi Totte.  It has been awhile since I was active with DAZ.  I know a lot has changed with 4.9.

I recently setup a new clean install of OS Sierra because I was having a lot of issues aside from DAZ.  When I tried to go into DAZ none of my content would install properly (thousands of purchases and lots of 3rd party).  So I am now needing to do clean install of DAZ on this Sierra install.

Do I need to go through DIM or just install 4.9 and use Connect?  My original setup had DIM and all installers on one external HDD and my DAZ library on a different one.  I don't mind deleting both of those folders if I know that I can just install 4.9 and map everything again to an External and setup up my 3rd party runtime paths like I did before.

    Thanks.

Have you tried to just tell DAZ Studio the location of the content in the Content Directory Manager and then clean the Content Manager Daabase and reimport metadata?

No need to delete and reinstall content, just tell Studio where it is.
