I have only just tried using this type of light yesterday. I see that it provides light like I would assume. My question is, in what sort of ways would one typically use a linear point light? What is its function?
It's used to create a 'light falloff'; an object further from the light gets less light. Double the distance, half the light strength. It is not a real life simulation. For that at double the distance the light strength should be a quarter (squared, or inverse squared as it is callled depending on the program used....).

double post.....
Remember that these work only in 3Delight - in Iray non-distant lights always obey the inverse square law for fall-off
Oh well that answers that then! lol I only use Iray so i guess it doesn't matter and I haven't been missing out on anything useful. Thanks Richard! :)
