Help! All my characters are white when I render

I'm sure I screwed up a render setting, but my search hasn't turned up anything here and I'm hoping it's an easy fix.  Everything else in the scene looks OK, but the figures are all white with no definition.

Any help is appreciated.  TIA

yes.  I should have followed the old axiom that rebooting the PC will fix most problems.  I rebooted and sure enough, all was well.
