Help with Silk/Sheer Shader Preset

I bought this product today and I don't understand how to make it apply to my clothing. I am trying to apply one of the silk shaders to a G2F set of clothing. I have the clothing item selected but this Shader Set doesn't appear as an option under Surfaces. So, I located it in my My Content folder and tried to apply it that way. It doesn't work. There is no "Apply First" option, only the various patterns and colors. I checked my folders for some sort of Read Me file but there isn't one. Does anyone know how this works? It was $18 and I'm sure it will be worth it if I can get it to work. Please help

Thank you,

  • Have you selected the surfaces you want to affect as well as the model?

Well yes, that's what I said. I have the clothing item selected. I just tried selecting the model too just to see but it still didn't do anything. It's kinda frustrating. I figured it would be a easy Click/Apply thing but either it's not or I'm doing something very wrong.

Are you double-clicking on the icon for the colour you are wanting? Single clicking will merely highlight the selection in the Content Library tab. Also, be aware that unless you hold down the Ctrl key when you double click, and choose "Ignore" under Map Settings in the resultant pop-up, any texture maps for the clothing will not be used and you'll simply get a plain colour texture. Lastly, if you do choose to keep the original texture maps as described above, the colours from the diffuse texture map will be combined with the colour you chose from the silk shaders and the result will be a combination of the two.

Yes I'm double clicking. And there is no pop up that appears. The surface doesn't change at all. It's like when you tell a dog to fetch and it just watches you throw the stick and stares at you because it doens't know what that "fetch" means.

I don't have this particular product but this describes how to apply shaders.
Shaders are applied to specific Materials Zones:

    1. I use the Surfaces Select Tool.  Select it. (It's highlighted in the tool bar on the attached pic).
    2. Select a material zone, it will highlight.  In Windows, hold down the Ctrl key if you want to select multiple surfaces.
    3. Double Click a Shader Preset to apply the shader to the selected material(s).

Beware this product was developed for the 3Delight renderer so your results may vary with Iray renderer.

Edit: Note that if you have the Surfaces Tab visible, you can see it jump around as you select the various surfaces in the viewport.

These shaders look like they are made for 3DL so if you are trying to add them to an Iray set may not work

There is a script to change things from Iray to 3DL in the freebie forum so try running that on the clothing first:

or try with a 3DL item to test the theory :)

OHHHH!! I should have seen that coming! I am addicted to Iray and not interested in 3DL Renders. Oh well. Thank you all for your help. I'll make a post it for my monitor and write "If it's not working...is it for 3DL?!" to remind myself.

Would this product cover my needs? I simply want to have the option to "satinize" some of my outfits

Jens shaders are always a good deal.  I have quite a few.  I don't have that particualar one, but it's on the wishlist.  It does say it has satin shaders.

I don't have the one you are having trouble with either.  But if you can get it on the clothes, you might be able to just hit it with the Iray Uber to get them to work in Iray.  You may have to fiddle with some surface settings.  If not, or you don't want to fool with it, DAZ has a great 30 day return policy.

Have you actually selected the item in the Surface tab before selecting the shader? They work fine for me.

They work fine for you in Iray?

Most texture maps will work fine in Iray. The procedural settings that often accompany textures designed for 3Delight or other render engines will not, as is. But DAZ Studio will apply a conversion to such settings (what would usually be called shaders) to make them Iray compatible. It will do this automatically if Iray is selected as the render engine, or one can do it manually by selecting the Iray base shader or another and applying them to the surfaces. The results of the conversion will vary, and I suspect the conversion works best for 3Delight materials, as opposed to materials made for Poser, for example, but I haven't really tested that out. So, since you already have the texture pack/shader set, apply what you want to a surface, then apply the Iray uber base shader to it, do a spot render and see how it looks.

I have already been given store credit for the item I purchased and used it to get an Iray shader set that includes Satin. That'll be much easier than massaging Daz to get it to do what I want. I just wish items in the store would state that they only work in 3DL or that with 9 work arounds, you can get them to function moderatly in Iray.
