Question reguarding Geometry memory consumption iray

I'm a little confuzzled. I own a GTX 1070. I have 8 gigs of Vram. But it hit 883MB Geometry memory consumption and then went into CPU render mode... Just wondering what the deal is on that. Am I not understanding how it works? Or is there something I'm not doing?

Did it switch immediately, or did it calculate the texture and material memory first?
Are you allowing for textures?
im not sure where do i look?
Texture use should be another of the things reported by Iray - look in the log file, at the end, after the render completes (Help>Troubleshooting>View Log).
