Could anyone (maybe the vendor) tell me the correct image ratio to use. I have tried 3:2 which is 35mm as this is the typical film used for passport photos (as suggested by the vendor) but this appears, on screen at least, to give distortion.
So what ratio should the photo be that I need to load in to the program?

The picture might look distorted but when you go to pick the point to use in the morph and the morph is created it won\t be distorted anymore.
Yes, I noticed that. However, the end morph does look distorted, or at least not much like the photo. I guess this is going to require some work. I also suspect that the angle of the head in the photo must match the example shown almost perfectly. To me, the "correct" photo appears as though he is looking up a bit rather than straight forwards.
The option of having a side view is great in principle but unless you happen to be the photographer, how often do you have a complete side profile? Rarely, if ever. If the software could accept a 3/4 perspective view image, that would be great. Both full frontal and side view portraits are rare in photography (unless you happen to be in the care of the local law enforcement agency, hehe), whereas 3/4 perspective view is extremely common.
I also had trouble getting a decent side profile with my phone. Because lighting also matters.
In practice I'm not sure how often people are going to fruitfully use that.
If the person is a celebrity, you may be able to get a screen grab from video to get a profile shot. Maybe bump it up in Photoshop for higher res but I'm thinking it's mostly for the morph and the texture comes from the front view.

My bathroom usually doubles for my photobooth- for the better lighting and use of the mirror.
I also use the ARM FULLY ENTENDED selfie stick. lol
I take a massive amount of head shots and then grab the best one or two.
I've gotten very good results from slightly to the side angles. The program knows enough about human symmetry and probability that a hidden ear or checkbone will be estimated using the visible part of the face and then using symmetry to mirror to the hidden part of the face.
You can manually afterwards use the silder to rid the morph of all asymetry befor exporting but that will get rid of the person's natual asymmetry, which we all have a bit of.
The program just looks at the points that you plot. It doesn't care about the size or ratio of your photo. You can crop it if you want. The photo should be at least 1024 x 1024 though, as that is the maximum image data that it uses for computation, from what I understand. Everything gets scaled down to 1024 x 1024.
It's good to hear that a slightly off center front view is accepted and useful. This raises the question; will a slighly "off center" side view also be accepted? I have seen some strange mesh deformations when using a picture which was not fully side view, but that may have been due to the front view right cheek being slightly obscured by hair. I will have to play with this to find the limits, I suppose.
I hope the program author will add a 3/4 perspective view option to the software in the next upgrade. (see image showing the three views, image taken from the internet)
