I have an i7 3550K. 16GB DDR3 ram and a Radeon Fury 9. I'm painfully aware that Daz's Iray does no good with the Radeon, which is a shame.
I can render decent though the Iray CPU rendering likes to crash occasionally and when it doesn't it takes forever.
my question is, should I just sidegrade my vid card to a 1060? Or would it be wiser to upgrade my processor to a current gen i5 7th gen or i7 7th gen.
i don't have a lot of money to spare, the 1060 would cost approx 350(C$) which is attainable. While upgrading my system would cost probably triple that cuz of new mobo, proc and DDR4 plus a new win10 cuz changing the mobo may invalidate my copy.

Well, whatever you choose to do I'd wait until the AMD Ryzen goodies are out. One thing about AMD reentering the higher end consumer cpu market in a big way, that will likely cause prices to drop. If so, a newer generation I7 might become more affordable assuming its compatible with your older motherboard, as well as a new card. Personally, I'd just upgrade the card if it's mission critical. From what you've said, I likely have the same or similar gen processor in my older machine and it works fine. Yes, it;s as slow as waiting for an honest politician to appear but it gets the job done. If you can't wait for the probable prices drops that Ryzen will bring, say early summer, then I'd just go for the card upgrade.

I would agree with Bob, getting a 1060 now will give you an immediate improvement.
The i7 3550k with 16GB is still a high spec. system.
...and you will be able to move the 1060 to any new system when you do upgrade.
Oh one other thing. I have my doubts but say I get a 1060 would I be able to run it alongside my R9 Fury? Specifically for rendering?
I've also been keeping an eye on Ryzen and some info was leaked of the 8th Gen Intel
I did it. I grabbed a 1070 instead of the 1060 so I can pull it over to the new system that I'll probably build as soon as intel drops their 7th gen processors. been doing some test render and omg I have been missing out. it's at least 5x faster rendering then pure cpu (at least using the 3770k).
