Opening Duf Files in Notepad, newly created ones gobbletygook

Hi, not sure if this is the correct place to ask this. But I've just created some new Mat files and when I open it in Notepad it doesn't look the same as the older files.
I've attached copy of what it should look like (the readable one) and a copy of what I now have (looks corrupt or encrypted or such?)
I haven't done anything different to the way I normally do it (and the mat files still work fine for me).
I'm running Version 4.9.3.166 Pro Edition 64bit. (I did try re-saving them in 4.8 but got the same gobbledegook)
Edited to add: Any way of removing this post? (I stupidly had compression checked :P)

You probably had the Compress file option checked - in which case you can uncompress using the Batch Convert pane inside DS or an archive tool (I usually use 7Zip since it has a right-click option on the file).
