"Attaching" object to figure and adhereing non wardrobe to figure

How can you attach an child/object to a figure hold and carry it?.How do you keep from moving the figure empty handed and what they were carrying is left behind (suspended in mid-air)? What do you click on to keep what they're carrying with them in their hands or arms?  Also how do you attach a non wardrobe item like a bandage? 
They don't stay on  and move with the figure neither,the figure moves right out on them.

Parent the item to the body part it shoukld move with, either by drag-and-drop in the Scene pane or by right-clicking on the child item and selecting Change "item" Parent then pciking the parent bone in the dialogue.
