Unknown icon with iray preview: what is it?

When I select Iray preview, a new icon appears at the left of the draw settings: it has a + and a - sign, and a small sun. What is it for?

It's an auto-exposure gadget - in theory click on it, then click on an area that should be reasonably lit and the exposure will be adjusted (Tone mapping in Render Settings). I haven't found the knack of clicking in the right place and tend to get a blown-out render if I use it.
In the Draw Settings pane, you can select whether the +/- controls exposure, white balance, or both.
Also, as I have been reminded, clicking in the viewport samples a single pixel but dragging out a rectangle samples all the pixels in the rectangle, which should give a more manageable result (I think I should have known that but had forgotten).
