GPU Issues with New DS

So I installed the update today and attempted to render a scene that worked just fine yesterday. Now nothing comes up.
I reconized the state of the resulting render window as an error I have seen before; a sort of "didn't bother to try" error message. The status window says the render is completed, yet it went way too fast.
Checked the Log File and see:
2017-01-05 14:24:27.740 WARNING: dzneuraymgr.cpp(307): Iray ERROR - module:category(IRAY:RENDER): 1.0 IRAY rend error: Cannot render: found no usable devices.
Nothing has changed in the scene. Nothing has changed in my hardware.
Looking higher up in the log file I see:
2017-01-05 14:24:13.787 WARNING: dzneuraymgr.cpp(307): Iray WARNING - module:category(IRAY:RENDER): 1.0 IRAY rend warn : GPU 1 (GeForce GTX 980M) with CUDA compute capability -1.-1 cannot be used by iray.
2017-01-05 14:24:13.787 WARNING: dzneuraymgr.cpp(307): Iray WARNING - module:category(IRAY:RENDER): 1.0 IRAY rend warn : There is no GPU available to the iray renderer.
Now attempting to update my GPU software to see if that makes a difference. Have to post to be able to reboot...

That's a typical error when the driver is below the minimum for Iray.
I came to the same conclusion as I was writing that post. So I just updated the drivers and now it appears to be rendering, instead of throwing the error.
However the render window is remaining the grey and white checkerboard. Going to give it some time and see what happens.
Yep. That fixed it.
I generally don't like to update the graphic drivers if everything is working... Not having a specific improvement I need also makes me skip a lot of them.
I think Nvidia needs to be clearer on the minimum required version, than just stating 'Recent Nvidia Driver', that I found on the official Iray 2016.3 page. I guess by recent they really mean 'newest'...
Well, I figured that if anyone searches on these error messages, maybe they will find these posts.
Thanks for the help. :)
Want to upgrade to 4.9.3 and am wondering if my Nvidia 660ti will run on it with the drivers I've been using for 4.9 on my MAC (not Windows) ... or if absolutely must install new drivers, or a new CUDA version, some of which (like the newest, I think) only run on OS 10.10, or 10.11 and higher, which would be a problem because I am running on 10.8.3.
For using any graphics program you have to stay up to date on your GPU driver. Nvidia has an app called Nvidia Experience that will notify you when a new version is available.
I know, I use it. And generally ignore the updates as I have been burned by their updates in the past. And most of the time the updates have to do with games that I don't own. So I just wait until the update is absolutely necessary.
I'm having a similar issue rendering photoreal on a dell precision laptop with Nvidia quadro 1000m. Before this latest update, I could render gpu or cpu in Iray.. after the update, it will only render CPU in photoreal. I updated my nvidia drivers to the latest, and still getting the same thing, either black or grey scene when trying to only use gpu. I can, however, render interactive with the gpu.. which strikes me as rather odd.. why one and not the other?
Where did you get the drivers from?
If they were from Dell, they may not be recent enough to work with this version of Iray. A very recent version is needed.
Hey mjc.. from nvidia.. I always update from there
Then that should be the latest...
Too many times the drivers from the manufacturer's support site lag behind the official ones, that's why I asked.
