How to get started making Environments

I am blown away by some of the environments I see here on Daz and am curious to know how they are made. What sort of programs do people use? How does a person get started?

What are you looking at, specifically...cityscapes, wilderness, ocean...?

What you are trying for does influence which programs you'll use in creating it.  Some are better for some parts than others.

But most often, you'll be needing to use several programs...like a polygon modeller for buildings, something like X-frog for vegetation generation and something like Vue for terrain/sky.  Or some, like Blender...with various add-ons can do most/all of the above.

I was thinking I'd start with basic interiors. What would I use for that?

can use DAZ studio and primitives enlightened

Otherwise Wings3D a very simple modeling program for starting off.

Any modeler...interiors are pretty much just polygon modeling.

Great! Thanks for the input! :) Oh and ToeJam, seriously odd choice for a picture and screen name lol

Aren't there certain things you have to do to make things able to render in Iray though?
