Best settings when rendering ?

Hi all,

I've just discovered the 'Render settings' tab,  but looking inside 'advancded' I've no idea what the settings all mean :-(

Don't have the faintest idea what the texture compression values mean.

Under Hardare:Photoreal devices I have the choice between CPU and GeForce GTX 750 - It was on CPU so I changed it to the graphics card.

Not sure if it has helped with render quality (which looks pretty good anyway) but about 10 times faster when rendeing, so i assume that was the correct thing to do !

Optix Prime acceleration - do i tick it ?

Interactive Devices - I have nothing ticked here (again, choices are CPU or GTX)

I also have NVIDIA Iray selected - not sure what all the others are (3Delight etc) - is that correct ?

Any help or advice greatly appreciated

All the best

Steve

  • Texture compression sets the sizes at which Iray applies its compression routines - the high one in particular can lead to loss of quality, but textures are the main consumer of memory (at least for most content made for Daz Studio). If memory is tight you may be better off manually resizing the maps and reassigning them, rather than have the Iray comperssion applied.

Switching devices won't affect quality directly (if the CPU times out and the GPU doesn't then that will affect quality, but indirectly). Note, however, that the GPU can be used only if the entire scene loads into the GPU's memory so on large scenes you may be forced to use CPU.

OptiX can, but doesn't always, increase speed - it varies by situation, try it and see.

The Interactive device options affexct previwe using nVidia Iray mode rather than rendering

3delight is a different render engine, using different shaders and geenrally giving different results. it's more flexible than the physically-based Iray, but can struggle to give the same degree of realism (especially fro things like metal ansd glass). It doesn't use the GPU at all, whether it's faster or slower than Iray will depend on how you use it - simple lighting wil quite often be faster, but trying to add the bounce lighting and so on that Iray does automatically can slow it right down.
