What does Instancing Optimization do

In the Iray Render Settings Optimization tab, there is a choice for memory or speed. What does this do?
Maybe a different question: In Stonemason Mayan Ruins there seems to be instances that don't display in the viewport but render in iray. How can I locate these nodes, if they only show up on render and are selectable in the viewpoint?

I believe Instancing Optimization is a tradeoff in rendering speed vs graphics card memory used. If you have a lot of instances and not much graphics card memory, selecting Memory for Instancing Optimization will help.
Here is a posting in another thread that may help you preview the instances.
You can find the isntances, probably grouped, in the Scene pane and if needed adjust their visibvility settings in the Display group in the Parameters pane.
The Render setting adjusts how instances are handled - as the labels say, one option will be faster at thee xpense of using more RAM while the other saves RAM at the expense of speed. I would try the speed option first, especially if you have an nVidia GPU with plenty of RAM, and switch to memory if your GPU can't handle the render but drops to CPU (which will render any speed gain moot).
