Trying to reinstall a older version of Studio

Okay I have been using a older version of 4.8 (I don't know the number off hand but I installed it June 1 of last year and it was current as of that time).  I finally got around to installing the latest version of 4.8  (4.8.0.59 to be specific) and it wiped out the content database (or it isn't reading the older version).  I didn't do a export beforehand BUT I did backup the entire database files manually.  Crazy me thought that would do it if  I had a problem.  I do have a older export but I would lose a lot of data if I used that.

So what I am trying to do now is install the previous version of 4.8 I had installed so I can restore the content database, export it then reinstall the 4.8.0.59 version of studio.  The problem is the older installer I have is a install manager version and requires DIM to do it.  I have tried a few things like sticking the original files in the DIM download folder and restarting IM but no dice.  I am guessing I need to alter the manifest files as well before it will let me revert.

I suppose I could uninstall it with DIM, but I was thinking that would zap all my settings/customizations as well.  I have never uninstalled studio, but I know some software does delete user settings, while others don't.  Any help is appreciated.

  • If you Work Offline in DIM you should be able to uninstall the existing version of DS, then install the older version from the zip. Though I am not sure how what you are seeing would happen with a version update.

Surprised me too.  I never had this happen with a update before.  After the update when I fired up Studio it took a long time at the "connecting to CMS" message then when Studio finished starting it promped me to import metadata.  I canceled that and now no metadata is seen (catagories are blank, smart content is blank etc), although the database files are still there so it didn't delete them.

  • Are you using PostgreSQL or Valentina?

Valentina at the moment.  Something else I am upgrading, well once I get this fixed.

Well I uninstalled with 4.8.0.59 and reinstalled my previous version 4.8.0.55.  Restored the CMS database files and no dice.  The CMS is still showing nothing (no smart content or catagories), however I think I have found out why.  Checking the log I found "Connected to CMS: PostgreSQL 9.3.4"  So it is using Postgre instead of the Valentina.  It must have been installed with the upgrade, odd I always thought that was a seperate install we had to do through DIM.  Anyway, I checked and found PostgreSQL under controlpannel and uninstalled it.  Copied the databases over from my backups (to be safe) and all is well.

Wish I realized Postgre was running, all would I have to do was uninstall it and restore.  I could have kept the 4.8.0.59 version of studio.  Ah well I will fix that shortly including doing a userdata export.

  • You would need to switch to use 4.9, and Valentina is prone to database corruption (one of the big reasons for Daz' switching) - it's possible your issues are down to that, not to the version of DS.

Oh I know it is prone to corruption.  And I think I found out one of the big reasons for it, if you have both DIM and Studio running at the same time corruption occurs.  After I made sure to never have both programs running at the same time, no further problems (the other problem is not to do a backup with the CMS service running or corruption can happen).  Still it is easy accidently fire up DIM when Studio is running, and a good idea to switch.  I have not got around to it.  For a while it was necessary to stay with Valentina as Carrara could not use PostgreSQL  Carrara has been updated, but it will take a long time to convert my Valentina database to PostgreSQL so I haven't got around to it.

And I am sure it is the version of DS I used as it installed PostgreSQL.  And since I was still using Valentina, all my CMS data seemed to be missing.  I installed 4.8.0.59 using a exe format not a DIM version.   Apparently, the exe version of 4.8.0.59 installs PostgreSQL by default.  Not a big deal now that I know.

I figured PostgreSQL would be a requirement with 4.9, but 4.9 has several aspects I dislike and I have no interest in using it.
