Rendering Iray-only sets in 3Delight

I don't use Iray. I work with large scenes, five or more figures to a render, usually with a view to making larger scenes by combining multiple renders in post-work. I do not use Iray.

More and more sets are being released which apparently only have Iray mats, for example the new Blind Demon http://www.daz3d.com/blind-demon which looks great, but according to the blurb at the bottom:

  • Textures Include:
    • 7 Texture, Displacement, Normal and Transparency Maps (4096 x 4096)
  • Daz Studio Iray Material Presets (.DUF

... only has Iray mats amd will therefore look a little bit wrong in 3Delight- at least if my previous experiences are to go by.

Is there an easy way to convert Iray mats for use in 3Delight, or should I just assume that I am no longer part of DAZ Studio's target market?

  • Given that most of the surfaces will be skin, of a kind, you could try applying a material for skin in 3Delight that you like, holding down cmd(Mac)/ctrl(Win) while double-clicking and then in the dialogue selecting Ignore for maps - that will apply the numeric settings but leave the existing maps (which appear to be standard types) in place, as long as the parameter names match. The catch with this figure is likely to be that being a stand-alone figure this is likely to have non-standard surface names, but you can work around that by selecting a skin surface on a human using material settings you like, saving a Shader preset (File>Save as>Shader Preset), then selecting all the "skin" surfaces on the demon and applying that shader preset (with the modifier key held down as above) - with an Iray material set for one of the standard characters that wouldn't be necessary as the names would match of course.
