No, it is NOT a sign of anything wrong. It is doing EXACTLY what it is supposed to be doing...converting the jpg image files to the format used by the 3Delight renderer. Iray does some image conversion, but it does it differently and it isn't shown doing it.
When rendering in 3Delight, textures are mipmapped before they are used -- a series of smaller versions of the texture are created, and the appropriately-sized version is used depending on how much space the texture in question takes up in the image. When you load textures the optimizing takes place in the background, but if it isn't complete when you start the render, the optimizing takes place then.

Or if you manually insert a new map, force an update (refresh) or make other changes after the initial run. Also if you manually clear out the temp folder/brickyard (like trying to correct the 'infamous' AoA shader 'white renders').

The brickyard won't cause images to be reoptimised, but it will require the shaders to be recompiled.

With some shaders it will (can't think of which ones...), but with some control maps when recompiling the shader it will redo the images and give them a new name (usually tack on a number to the name).
Also changes with LIE images usually force it, too.

Yes, a LIE edit is an image change. Changing the gamma in Render Settings will also require a re-optimsiation.

Yeah I think I changed the clor on the hair or something..
Changed hairs entirely. not doing it now.
