So how do you get the characters to be still while only one part of their bodies are moving? If I want to move one part -- the entire thing moves and thats even if I use the "pin."
With the universal tool you get the purple pins for locking rotation and/or translation, whihc work okay but still fairly easy to get the pinned parts to move.
Then theres the active pose tool. Using it, you want to open your tool settings tab, theres a button for pin at origin/ends/both, set that to pin at both, then select the body part(s) you want to pin and hit the toggle pins button for each part, then USING THE ACTIVE POSE TOOL ONLY you can move unpinned parts, and seems to work much better than universal tool pins BUT only with the active pose tool, if you switch to say the rotate, translate or universal tools the active pose pins will be ignored.

Theres two types of pins.
