Hairy Hat Syndrome

Most hats and headgear simply can't be made to fit around characters with anything other than buzz cuts, wet hair, or bald. How are you solving the problem of putting hats on figures without having hair poke through and still having the hat actually appear as if it is on/around a characters head? Scenes like the one pictured below I've found are almost impossible to achieve with most hairstyles.
Are you doing it in post, and what precedure have you found works the best?

Perhaps this would do.

Ahh Sickleyield, what would I do without you?
Don't know if it'll work, or not, but it's in my basket, and I'll be trying again as soon as I get off work. Thanks!
Generation 3 (V3, etc), but perhaps adaptable to newer figures?

Postwork
Render with the hair visible. Render again with the hair hidded. Combine.
You have to be careful of shadows.
More often than not I fiddle around with a D-Former on the hair until it looks OK at the camera angle I'm using. Sometimes takes a while, but I can usually get something useable eventually.
Depending on the headpiece, I sometimes increase the scale and see if it looks okay. For the most part, this has worked fine for me and the headgear doesn't look big. I may edit the hair morphs/scale as well too.
Thanks for the suggestions. Took a break for my birthday, but now I'm ready to get back to it.
