improve lighting for a single character?

I'm trying to render few characters with transparent backgrounds for my game and the default iray render settings looks fine but I'm wondering how can I improve how it looks? I tried 3 point lightning but it didn't look any better. perhaps I didn't do it right or it wasn't the right choice for renders with transparency.
to top that any HDRI map I try have the same effect as a solid color image, there's no variations in light and shadows at all. do you have any tips for my situation?

I generally use a Distant Light on defaults which looks fine to me. These were done in 3Dlight and the full image is them used on individual Planes in Iray.
I need something that looks alive, I don't think I can get better result using 3Dlight instead of Iray.
How about some images so we can see your results? Not all HDRI maps are equal.
I've linked one of my renders in the first post.
I should have said, the distant light works fine in Iray too.
the distant light looks flat as well, I need something more eye catching.
Try Sun and Sky and set the direction that gives the best shadows/contrast.
that's what I've been using with addition of few fill lights, still I feel there are some tricks out there that help people render their characters more pronounced
I'm not sure what to say. Do you have any photography experience? Are these samples more like what you want?
I have a bit of exprience in photography and lighting, though I've been experimenting with daz lights I can't re create the same photography light scenarios inside daz,
the one sitting on the bench is what I'm after, how can I emulate the light coming from window and bouncing around the room when I don't have any envirement and a transparent background?
You can't emulate light bouncing in Iray when there aren't any surfaces to bounce. The bench scene uses a physical floor and an HDRI background. There are also Iray spotlights. The light set is one of Sveva's from Rendo. Light like you would in a studio shot. You can build and use reflectors like a Studio and position them out of the shot. You can add geometry to a spot and make it a softbox.
