Mac crashes during Iray Render?

This has never happened before. I set up a shot and hit the render button and my trusty Mac Pro tower hiccups and shuts down.  Once it reboots, I try again and the same thing happened. I assume this may have something to do with heat? I have two Nvidia 680 cards and an external power supply. It's never happened before but it's been a very hot day so maybe it'll be fine once it cools down.

  • Which version of DS? Is it happenign with any scene or only certain content?

Daz 4.8.  Only tried the one shot so far.

I thought this was just about some overheating issue, but it just did it again after resting overnight.  Doesn't seem to happen with Daz 4.9.

  • The version of iray included with 4.8 did have soem crash bugs that were fixed in the version included with 4.9. One workaround, at least for Windows suers, was to uncheck the CPU in the Advanced tab of Render Settings - but I don't think that will help you as your cards will not be doing much, if anything, towards rendering. Using 4.9 is the most reliable fix.

Thanks. Why do you believe my cards aren't helping toward rendering?  I added the two Nvidia 680 cards specifically to speed of rendering on my older Mac Pro.

  • I'm not sure what their specifications are, but I thought it was geenrally necessary to have at least 7xx cards to see substantial gains. If they are working then try the deselecting the CPU tip if you want to render in 4.8

This Mac is the first time I've put in after-market cards for video rendering. Typically they would speed up when rendering and the fans would make a racket.  Now they are crashing without rendering a single frame.  Even when I Uncheck the CPU from the render options.  Any great tips on how to diagnose a video card?  I'm running 4.8 on a 2008 mac pro, two gtx 680 cards and an external power supply. It is even crashing when rendering in 4.9 now.

  • If it's getting worse that does suggest some kind of hardware issue, such as heat.
