Interactive tutorials crash at "Render Settings" step

When going through these tutorials:

  • Day at the Beach
  • Inside the Asylum
  • Sci-Fi Warrior

there's a point where it prompts me to click on the Render Settings tab. When I do that, DS immediately crashes to the desktop with no error message of any kind.

When not in a tutorial, I can switch to Render Settings with no problem.

I've tried these things with no success:

  1. Edit > Preferences > Interface > Restore Factory Defaults
  2. Un-docking the Render tab before starting the tutorial so it's already visible (the program just crashes at the point where it would have told me to open the tab)
  3. Render Settings > Editor tab > [Defaults] button in the upper right

Any idea why it's crashing or how I can work around this?

Haven't done those specific tutorials but the one I was working on had a step where you turn on iRay Preview Render in the main Viewport. It didn't crash DAZ Studio but it made DAZ Studio virtually unusuable because it spent all it's time rendering iRay previews. If those tutorials have a similar step, I'd recommend you skip that step & do the next step in to tutorial if the tutorial workflow allows that sort of decision.

Use the latest public build; do a "find in page" on the change log - http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/change_log. There were bugs with interactive lessons that have been fixed; a major refactoring has been done to unify how interactive lessons work under the hood, making them more adaptable to future internal and 3rd party additions. The lessons themselves are also in the process of being updated.

Thanks for the suggestion nonesuch. Unfortunately I don't think that's my problem since I'm viewing the tutorials in Textured Shaded mode.

Thanks Chohole. Looks like I'm already using the latest build (4.9.2.70). Unless I hear other solutions here, I guess I'll wait to see whether the problem is fixed by those in-progress lesson updates in future builds.

You need  The Public Build (Beta - 4.9.3.x), not the General Release (4.9.2.70). There are fixes in the 4.9.3.x builds that are specific to this problem.

I do apologise for not specifying that it was the beta.

  • Ah, got it. Thank you.

I've installed the public build, all my content libraries are showing as they should... and only one of the interactive tutorials is available (barefoot dancer). Maybe the others aren't available yet through the beta build. In the worst case, I'll just sit tight until 4.9.3 is officially released. Thanks for your suggestions, though.
