Question for GTX 980 Ti users

I am pretty positive this is the GPU I want to upgrade to but I have a couple of quick questions for you folks out there that already use it.

1: The Specs say that it has 2x 8Pin cable hook ups. When I watched a few YouTube videos on installation, it appears to have 1 6pin/1 8Pin. When I look inside my computer case at the cords that could be used for an additional GPU, I see 1 6Pin and 1 8Pin. Both videos were for the EVGA model. Does anyone know definitively what the ACTUAL set up is as far as that goes? I don't want to order it just to find my computer isn't configured for it.

2: It requires a minimum 600w PSU. My PSU is 600w. Am i going to run into any problems because it's minimum requirments are my computers maximum? I have seen some complaints about it "sucking a lot of juice" or being a "power hog." which leads to the whole computer shutting down. I assume those people are intense gamers or something and the GPU is being used for marathon periods of time. Do I need to upgrade my PSU as well or should 600w be enough to do renders?

Thanks in advance! :)

As far as the power supply being adequate - Above very basics what else do you have in the computer? Any extra hard drives? Any other video cards? Memory?

Well I bought this desktop specifically to use as my Daz computer. I don't have anything else hooked up to it aside from occasionally plugging in my external hard drive to fish something off of it. So no additional hardware, no. Unless you're counting my mouse and keyboard :P

    1 GTX 960

    24GB RAM

    Don't even have a CD-ROM

Do you plan on leaving the GTX 960?

Don't see why. It won't do anything for me. I've heard of SLI and the opinion seems to be spliton if it even matters in render speed. But they have to be the same type of GPU anyway so it wouldn't work.

Im currently using a 980 ti SC+. It has a 6 pin and 8 pin.

I would personally go with what the specs say. Yes, both are evga models but evga also makes multiple 980ti models, theres the standard one, SC, SC+, FTW edition, King pin, and etc. They all have various clock speeds and power draw meaning they can use different rail connectors.

Also if you have a link to the product, that might help us help you too.

Iray will still use the RAM from the second card. If you have the room then I'd keep them both. You can't use SLI in iray at this point in time.

Ahh, that's what heard. SLI and Iray don't mix.

But back to my two original questions? :)

We need to know what model 980 TI from EVGA you're looking at to answer your questions.

This is it. In reading the description is says it has 2x 8Pin. Their tech support said I could use the 6+2pin that is being used on my existing 960 and then the other 6+2Pin that is unused currently to "hotwire" it. I'm still curious about the PSU issue though. I don't want it demanding 600w and shutting down my computer because it's making it hit max power output.

Here is an online calculator for the power supply requirements: http://powersupplycalculator.net/

I tried a quick run-thru by making some guesses and based on what little I know of your computer setup. Leaving the 960 card in as well as adding the 980 card  I got a result slightly over 600 Watts.

So, Yes with both cards you will be over-stressing your power supply. The good news is you can get an 800 to 850 watt power supply at a very reasonable cost. For example an EVGA SuperNOVA 850 B2 80+ BRONZE for $80 on Amazon

Thanks Charlie! I appreciate you taking that time! I guess just to be safe, I will figure the cost of anew PSU into my upgrade budget. Thank you for the help.
