Installing to seperate HDD....

Well yet again, for the third time, I've managed to get my DAZ Studio content in a complete and utter mess and ended up with stuff all over the place.
I'm now considering wiping the whole lot off and starting again from a fresh install, is it possible to put DAZ and all it's content on to a separate drive ? I've got an old 500GB off a friend of mine I'm thinking if I had everything all in one place it might be much easier to manger it from now on. Can anyone tell me if this will be OK please or does it all need to be on the main drive ?

Thanks... Jon T.

You can install to a separate drive.

    Thanks for that....

OK I've now got the second HDD in place ready to start loading up DAZ (yet again) is there anything specific that I will need to do or be careful of installing it all on to a separate drive ?
This is an amazing, fascinating piece of software but it is a total nightmare trying to keep everything organised with it, it just seems to keep on creating folder after folder every time you add anything to it and some downloads just seem to spread themselves wherever they feel fit and you don't even realise that they've done it until you end up not being able to find stuff.

I am not sure what you mean here, do you use DIM (DAZ Install Manager) to download and install your content? If not, you should consider it, as it takes all the guesswork out of installations, and it informs you when something has been update.

I have never seen DS creating folder after folder for no reason, what do you mean by that exactly?

If you are using DIM, make sure that it is pointing to the correct HDD that you want to install to, and, once DS is installed, make sure that it knows where you content now is, by going to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager and listing the path to your content in BOTH DAZ Studio Formats AND Poser Formats.

    Thanks Jimmy.
I didn't mean DAZ it's self creates folders all over the place, I was more referring to unzipping downloaded files to the path they recommend in the read me's, when ever I do this I nearly always end up with a shed load of folders, even inside my library, that don't even look as though they should be installed to where they have gone and DAZ then ends up being like me, it can't find anything....haha!

Products downloaded from other sites, or even freebies, may use a different method of zipping up the folders than DAZ 3D do.

If there are zips that you download from other places, and you are not sure where everything goes, just post a screenshot of what the zip contains, and I'm sure we can help you with where it all goes.

    That's great, thanks Jimmy....

OK, sorry for bumping this thread but I've hit a problem ( I think ).
I decided against installing DAZ to a separate drive, I tried it and it was giving me loads of grief because nothing was where it was looking for it. What I've done instead is to install to the default path on drive 'C' and put all big stuff like 'My Library' and that on to drive 'D', I've also kept Install Manager on 'C' too. Now, everything is/was working really great, in fact the best I've had it running so far......
But, I've now come across a problem and DAZ doesn't seem to be quite tying things up together properly.
The issue I'm getting is when I'm trying to fit clothes or use stuff from anything other than Genesis 2, best example I can think of to explain is, when you try fitting clothes lets say from V4 and you're trying to get them on to a G2F, you get the little pop-up window which asks you which generation it was from and what the item best matches....
Well the problem I'm getting is that there are no choices showing up in those dropdown windows apart from Genesis and Genesis 2 Female.
Has anyone got any idea please on how I get my other stuff to show up in these windows again ?

    Thanks... Jon T.

P.S. - ( The program itself is running great and this seems to be the only issue so far ).

Do you have http://www.daz3d.com/victoria-4-for-genesis-2-female installed? Each of the 3 Genesis figures comes with autofit clones for the previous generation only.

    I'll check, maybe it's one of the ones I haven't reinstalled yet....thanks.

    Just a further explanation:

Genesis (original) came with Autofit clones for Victoria 4, Michael 4 and Kids 4. No Generation 3 or earlier, if you wanted them, they were a separate purchase.

Genesis 2 Female, as Mike said, came with a clone for the Genesis shape, if you wanted Generation 4 (V4 for example) you needed to buy something extra like Mike linked to.

Genesis 3 F only comes with a clone for Genesis 2 Female, there are no other clones available as yet, but it is possible to make your own.

You can also load and fit Genesis items to G2F, save them, and then Autofit them to G3F using the supplied clone, but it would be much simpler to have the correct clone.

Spot on guys! I hadn't got it installed, everything seems great again now that I have. I'm pretty happy with my new install so far, everything seems to be running much better than I've had it before and finding my content is much easier than it was.

Thanks for the help..... Jon T.
