Quick question about manually installing content

When I unzip the rar file, I open up the Content directory and just copy all the levels below that to My Library (e.g. data, people, runtime etc). I ignore the stuff at the top level (e.g. Manifest.dsx, Supplement.dsx). I don't know where they are meant to go, or what they do, but I assume they aren't actually required by Studio as the content always seems to work they way I install it.

Can anyone explain this?

If you install your content manually, the Manifest.dsx and Supplement.dsx in the root directory of the archive are not needed. Just ignore them. They are only for the Install Manager.

But if there are support files for the Smart Content tab (runtime\support), you also have to import them in the Content Library (Content DB Maintenance -> Re-Import Metadata). Otherwise the product will not shown in Smart Content, but it will anyway work correct.

You can install stuff offline using Install Manger. I just put the zip in the right folder and IM does the rest.

But this was not the question here. And if one asks me, this Install Manager is a big crap, not more and not less. And I also have no use for this botch.

Lol, why is it a big crap? It's a tool that lets you install content without the pain of having to do a short course in database management.

The questions you are asking is the very reason why the Install manager was developed, to solve these kind of issues, which is somewhat ironic, no?

In answer those files (Manifest and Supplement) are used by DIM to automatically install content according to your DIM settings. You should be fine to discard them if you don't want to use DIM. Without using DIM you will need to manually track when a product is updated if you wish to update your products and then do a full removal and clean install which can be a little problematic if you miss files that need to be removed.

thanks everyone. That's as I suspected. I shall carry on happily installing all my content manually :)
