Iray and Shadows

Hadn't notice this before but Iray will cast shadows even when there is no solid floor under a figure. Sort of a default shadow-catcher.

Also notice that I can turn "cast shadows" on and off when rendering in 3Delight, but that option goes away in Iray.

Actually the floor is there, it is just that the dome isn't being rendered. If you don't want the shadows, in the Environment Settings turn off Draw Ground.

So there is an automatic phantom dome around the scene? Perhaps that is why I'm getting such an overall lighting look when I'm trying to a very stark one-direction lighting. Is there a way to use Iray for such outer-space style shots when there would be very little if any fill in the shadows?

Put in a dark hdri in the enviroment map slot or turn the environment intensity way down.

Yes, I played with all those various sliders in the Iray Render menu and found that environment intensity really decreased the scatter and increased render time. What exactly is Environment Intensity.

Oh…and is there a way to get motion clue in Iray? Would decreasing the shutter speed help?

Iray being 'physically based' will always have shadows...no 'on/off' switch in real life...none in Iray or any other PBR.
