You could install the Public Beta, then - if this is your first Public Beta - uninstall and reinstall shaders and those plug-ins that don't have updated versions specifically for the Public Beta. Having two different release version is not, however, supported.
The short answer is yes I have both 4.6 and 4.8 up and running on the same machine
I took all the folders for 4.6 and move'd them on to an back up drive
I then pick which version I want to run

Do not do it, it is not suppose to be possible so there is no predicting the conflicts that can arise from having both installed.
