HDRI in iray-Does it light up surrounding environments and props?

I've purchased some hdri for irays at daz, its awesome to see you can just load hdri maps and dome and render and that provides the lighting for your character and makes it blend with the background hdri image.
My question can I use this to light up environment, props and scene too? let say I load Stonemason's Old London and a character, will the hdri dome lights light up my character and Stonemason's Old London, or just the character only?

Depends on the scene setup, and type of HDR used, sometimes additional lighting is required to properly illuminate entire scene. Occasionally, I toss in a set of meshlights to accuratetly illuminate character or darker area's. Best way to know is experiment. Cheers.
The HDRI will light up the entire scene, as long as there's no skydome. If there's a skydome, the light will be blocked. The same happens if you use Sun-Sky or distant light with skydome.
It is perhaps worth remembering that in the real world, professional photographers still use lights and reflectors when shooting portraits outdoors. HDRI light may be very natural-appearing and very convenient, but not necessarily the 'best' light for your scene.
If the HDRI is of good quality then in theory it is all that is needed. But I agree with Ostadan you do have to be a photographer with Iray as it is a Photoreal renderer. Take this image for example http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/61190/ Just HDRI lighting. One for the HDR ProSets Yosemite Pack Two set
A good quality HDRi becomes the basis for the scene lighting. In some cases, it is all that is needed. But in others, like has been mentioned, supplemental lighting is needed/wanted...often for effect.
Some of the best uses, in exterior scenes are not for portrait work, but rather large scale scenes, architectural, vehicles and the like or shots that aren't particularly close up/portrait like.
Pete, other than the tires looking like they were put on, right after the bike was parked there or hit with some Armor-all...it looks great.
Remember to check the page we created to point to established threads where many Iray users have been discussing Iray topics. The fewer threads with concentrations of information, the easier it can be to find what you're looking for.
I respectfully disagree Chris as it isn't easy to find. Having a thread about a particular Iray topic is better then one big thread.
On the other hand, it's at least good to check the pages in that pointer thread to see if a topic is already covered or contains other information for which the poster may have a question or interest.
True Chris
thanks for the input, and i'll try and post iray related question to the iray forums. Thanks.
