Is this item valid for DS 4.8 atmospheric effects, volumetrics, etc

No, it just works for 3Delight, and 4.8 doesn't have any of these features "built in".

There's a simple way of creating fog in Iray described by Sickleyield in a tutorial (Let me dig it out...)

That said... if you are planning to continue using 3Delight (personally, I use both 3Delight and Iray), the camera set is worth buying. It gives you some great effects without much hassel.

As a rule of thumb, all of AOAs sets are worth buying. :-)
They are well thought out and have a lot of flexibility.

It can give you a pretty good idea of what the set can and can't do, and maybe help you with the decision.
