Please Help With DIM Weirdness

Hi everyone,

I'm surely the oldest brand-new newbie lurking around - due to life circumstances and a deadbeat PC I've spent the past 2 years collecting content but never using it.
I am thankfully now at last in a position where I can actually start creating and stop drooling.
Unfortunately things are apparently not that simple:

I configured DIM to install all my content to: D:\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library
File Locations:
Daz 4.7 (64-bit) is installed in: C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4
DIM (1.1.0.28) is installed in: D:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZ3DIM1
DIM Downloads: D:\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\Downloads
DIM Installation 64 bit Software: C:\Program Files
DIM Installation 32 bit Software: D:\Program Files (x86)
The content path in Daz Studio 4.7 for both Daz and Poser formats link to D:\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library
--> Please see attached screen shots of: DIM settings, CSV file, DIM Log File

After I've started to download & install a few products, I fortunately decided to make sure that everything was going to the right place before going ahead with the rest.
BUT - things are behaving very strangely:
1) Some of the same content installed in both (duplicates): D:\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library & C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library
2) According to the DIM CSV file DAZ Studio 4.7 (Win 64-bit) is installed in D:/DAZ 3D/My DAZ 3D Library - but it is actually in & running from: C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\DAZStudio.exe
3) According to the DIM CSV file the following content is installed in: C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library - but in fact it is also in D:\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library
a)"Genesis 2 - DMC","C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library"
b)"Genesis 2 Male Starter Essentials PoserCF","C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library"
c)"Genesis Evolution: Body Morphs","C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library"
d)"Genesis Evolution: Head Morphs","C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library"
e)"Subsurface Shader Base","C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library"
4) There are empty "Installed To" spaces for the following in the DIM CSV file:
"PostgreSQL CMS (Win 64-bit)",""
"PostgreSQL CMS From Valentina CMS Conversion",""
"Scene Builder for DAZ Studio",""
5) I can remember that I recently allow some Product Updates to download & install - according to the modified dates of the files on the C & D drives it seems as though the ones on D are more recent.

Ironically Daz Studio seems to be working and I can see the content that is suppose to be there.

I can imagine that this may cause an issue when DIM tries to update Daz Studio and the products that show to be installed to the C drive.
Questions:
1) Was this caused by my settings? - what should they be?
2) Is there some log file thingy for DIM where I can change these paths in a text editor - or won't it fix anything?
3) Do I need to uninstall the troublesome files mentioned above (a - e) in DIM first?
4) Can I assume that the files on the D drive will be the updated ones as their "modified dates" are more recent?
5) How do I get DIM to believe me that Daz Studio 4.7 actually exists in C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4?
6) Are the empty "Installed To" spaces in point 4 above an issue?
7) According to the DIM log "Ron's Digital Energy Brushes" is repeated - what do i do about that?

Thanks in advance - your time and help are greatly appreciated!

    First couple of questions

....Are you using Postregl or Velentina for your database?
....Do you actually own and use a version of poser or just DAZ3D?
....What path does your Daz use to look for its content?
....You said you've been lurk buying for years so then my question is are these all brand new installs or did you have older partial installs already on your computer like the DIM?

    Hi,

    Thank you for your reply.

    1) Are you using Postregl or Velentina for your database?
The intention was to use Postgre - but if I look at the DIM log file it seems as though I must be using Velentina - "Connected to CMS: 4.8"

    2) Do you actually own and use a version of poser or just DAZ3D?
    Just DAZ3D

    3) What path does your Daz use to look for its content?
Content path for both Daz and Poser formats link to D:\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library

    4) Are these all brand new installs or did you have older partial installs already on your computer like the DIM?
I have a brand new laptop (Windows 8) - so everything (including DIM & DAZ3D) are brand new installs
The only content that I've physically copied to my new PC were products from other stores and they are in a separate folder from the Daz content (see screen shot)

    Additional Information:
The laptop was a present from my husband - he installed all the software that I use to have on my old PC before he gave it to me.
He has no recollection on how he went about to install Daz Studio - he most likely didn't use DIM.
Knowing him I can 100% guarantee that he didn't read any instructions - he will rather break things before reading a manual!!!

    Questions:
    1) I suspect that starting over might be the best solution?
    2) I assume the first step will be to uninstall all the installed products in DIM?
    3) Can I keep my Software installation paths in DIM as:
-- DIM Installation 64 bit Software: C:\Program Files
    -- DIM Installation 32 bit Software: D:\Program Files (x86)
    4) I have however no idea how to safely uninstall DAZ3D on my C-drive without using DIM?
(I had to do it once on my old PC and had endless issues with DAZ3D afterwards)
    5) Regarding your question about Poser - I assume that it should not be ticked in DIM download options - what about the other settings, e.g. "Public & "Private Build"?

Thanks again - I'm feeling at this stage that I'll never get started if I can't even install the software correctly!

Sorry I work late so just getting to this. You'll get it all set up I'm sure :)

Yes I was asking about poser because if you do NOT have the program installed you're just giving yourself more links to have to sort through unnecessarily. The good thing about DIM is it checks the files and if poser is the only version available it will still show as a download for you even with that unchecked. Having public and private builds checked is fine just be sure that if there are 2 versions of the same thing you're only using one.

If you have the bandwidth to spare I would suggest uninstalling everything through the DIM, then uninstall the DIM itself and delete all of your currently downloaded packages on the computer. This is a more cautious approach to setting up but it will help identify where the disconnect is (if there is one).

You should be fine uninstalling D|S through the DIM. Just make sure you have deleted all the old download files from your HD before starting over. It could be you had a corrupt download file. Your program files are fine going to the default program folders.

    1) If you have things like Bryce, photoshop, hexagon, etc have those installed and updated first.
    2) Install DIM. Immediately set the download paths, installation paths, and what type of files you wish it to filter for.
    3) install PostreSQL
    4) install D|S. Immediately set its file paths for content, then close it down. If you are pathing to an empty folder and it asks you 'contains no runtime do you wish to add it', say yes. Your paths above look good but I would suggest adding them under -other formats- as well just to be safe.
    5) install any plug ins you own next.
    6) Now install the genesis 1 and 2 essentials.

Then reopen D|S and check a couple of things:
Make sure the plug ins are showing as being recognized by D|S. If any of them require serials numbers make sure they are showing otherwise you'll have to enter them yourself.
Now that you have some content in there verify that PostreSQL is running. Open your computers task manager and check the running processes. if its working you'll see anywhere from 5 to 10 instances of it running.
Lastly check that the content is showing under your content library tab (the one that looks like a file hierarchy) & under your smart content tabs.

If after ALL of that everything looks to be good you're clear to download the rest of your content. If it doesn't let me know where the break happened and we'll try something else.

Thanks for your detailed reply - and much appreciated that you take the time to answer after a long day of work!

If you do not mind - can I please double check & clarify a few points:

    1) I think the main problem is that when my husband presented me with a new PC with fully installed software he must have installed DS manually.
I can not uninstall DS through DIM as DIM has its path as D:/DAZ 3D/My DAZ 3D Library
BUT in reality it is not there but in C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\DAZStudio.exe
After manually uninstalling DS on my old PC the new install didn't work properly afterwards - it was partly why I didn't bother till now to use DS but waited for my new PC (and yet again I find myself in the same position - talk about irony!)
--> is there a reason why I can't use a program like Wise Program Uninstaller to remove DS - it claims to "delete all the left associated files, folders and registry items after the de-installation, making sure the software is completely removed from your computer"
--> I have PostgreSQL CMS on my HD (though neither DS or DIM are currently using it, see screen shot) - do I need to remove it too - how?

    2) As in above I will have the same problem with the following products which are duplicated on both C & D drive:
    a)“Genesis 2 - DMC”,“C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library”
    b)“Genesis 2 Male Starter Essentials PoserCF”,“C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library”
    c)“Genesis Evolution: Body Morphs”,“C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library”
    d)“Genesis Evolution: Head Morphs”,“C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library”
    e)“Subsurface Shader Base”,“C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library”
    >> These products are ALSO in D:\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library - that means that DIM will uninstall it in C BUT not in D
--> Do they have uninstallers that one can use or can I just delete them?

    3) Removing DIM will be as simple as running D:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZ3DIM1\Uninstallers?

    4) "Just make sure you have deleted all the old download files from your HD before starting over"
--> do you refer to the DIM download files in my D:\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\Downloads - or are there other files too?

    5) I have Bryce & Hexagon but decided not to install it for now and to rather concentrate solely on DS.
--> will this cause issues in the future if I change my mind?
I have unfortunately a newer version of Photoshop and as I understand Bridge will only work with: "3D Bridge for DAZ Studio 4 requires CS4 or CS5" https://helpdaz.zendesk.com/entries/21045731-How-to-install-and-use-3D-Bridge-in-DAZ-Studio-4-Pro

My apologies to keep on pestering you with this, but I can right now do with something positive / creative in my life as I've spent every non-working moment and night for the past 4 months next to the bedside of my ex (who was also my best friend and father of my children) watching him die a slow and agonising death.

P.S. pardon my grammar mistakes (English is not my first language) :-)

Sorry for the late reply, but a few points:

I can not uninstall DS through DIM as DIM has its path as D:/DAZ 3D/My DAZ 3D Library
BUT in reality it is not there but in C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\DAZStudio.exe

The DIM path D:/DAZ 3D/My DAZ 3D Library is the path for installing content, not software. The DAZ Studio package (zip file) includes a few content files that get installed there (some utility scripts), but the application itself gets installed to the software install location (32-bit or 64-bit). The default in DIM is under Program Files.

    2) As in above I will have the same problem with the following products which are duplicated on both C & D drive:
    a)“Genesis 2 - DMC”,“C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library”
    b)“Genesis 2 Male Starter Essentials PoserCF”,“C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library”
    c)“Genesis Evolution: Body Morphs”,“C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library”
    d)“Genesis Evolution: Head Morphs”,“C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library”
    e)“Subsurface Shader Base”,“C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library”
    >> These products are ALSO in D:\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library - that means that DIM will uninstall it in C BUT not in D
--> Do they have uninstallers that one can use or can I just delete them?

You can manually delete the files -- those are all purely content and don't have registry entries or other files outside of the content folder they're installed in. Note that the PoserCF is not needed at all if you don't use Poser.

    3) Removing DIM will be as simple as running D:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZ3DIM1\Uninstallers?

    Correct

    4) "Just make sure you have deleted all the old download files from your HD before starting over"
--> do you refer to the DIM download files in my D:\DAZ 3D\InstallManager\Downloads - or are there other files too?

That's right, just the files in the Downloads folder.

    5) I have Bryce & Hexagon but decided not to install it for now and to rather concentrate solely on DS.
--> will this cause issues in the future if I change my mind?

No, you can install them later if you decide to, it won't cause any problems to wait.

I believe the Bridge will work with CS6 and CC now, but I don't own them so I'm not positive.

My apologies to keep on pestering you with this, but I can right now do with something positive / creative in my life as I've spent every non-working moment and night for the past 4 months next to the bedside of my ex (who was also my best friend and father of my children) watching him die a slow and agonising death.

My condolences, that's a horrible thing to have to go through. I hope this can be a useful creative outlet for you. Feel free to ask for help any time.
