Question about shop items that say daz studio but NOT daz studio 4.7

So this might be a silly question but I figured I would ask it before buying some things. Do items that say compatible software is "daz studio" work completely with the current daz studio 4.7? I have had issues in the past with programs not being fully backwards compatible so I didn't want to take any chances.

Also will they work with the daz install manager?

Thanks!

Best to post questions about specific items...because, yeah most of them will work, but there are some that won't. Most of the stuff should have a version number, but...

Other way round — it's a case of the content, not the program, not being fully forward compatible. Anything that says explicitly "DAZ Studio 4.7" (or whatever the current release version happens to be) will have files fully set up for any version of D|S since, I think, 4.5 when the file format was changed.

If it only says "DAZ Studio" then it's probably an older item, and either it will have been made for an earlier version of D|S but will still work in current versions, or it's only in Poser format, which means most things will work with no problems.

This is where things can get complicated. D|S can read Poser-format files, but it handles advanced materials settings in a different way from Poser. Look carefully at the "What's Included" part of the store page; if it mentions D|S format files, that's OK. If not, then you're likely to have only Poser materials, which will probably need a bit of tweaking to look good in D|S, because the advanced Poser materials settings are not understood by D|S.

Everything in the DAZ store "works with" DIM, except some actual programs (not content to be used in programs) and things like texture resource sets. These are best downloaded and installed manually from your Product Library page.

I can't answer your question completely for all of the thousands of items in the store, but I can make some general statements that might help. My answers apply only to the DAZ store and not other sites, of course.

Last question first. I believe that all the content currently available in the store has been converted to allow installation using DIM now. I know that all the items in my downloads area, including some old stuff purchased years ago has the DIM option. So I feel pretty confident in saying that pretty much everything has DIM compatibility.

As for content being compatible with the current version of DAZ Studio, it is important to draw a distinction between content such as models, character morphs, clothing and props versus utilities. Insofar as utilities are concerned, they often are designed for particular versions of DAZ Studio, so, unless they are newer products or expressly state which versions they work with, you should enquire specifically first. As for normal content, it generally will work with the most recent versions of DAZ Studio, although older content will lack the ability to utilize some of the newer features of DAZ Studio. For example, some old content may not have metadata so won't show up in smart content, although some does. But generally that older content will work the same as it ever did. I have quite a bit of older content and do not have a problem with any of it.

Others can offer second or third opinions, but that is my experience.

Just to prove a point ....

Victoria 1, aka 'The Millennium Woman', was one of Digital Art Zones' (as it was then called) first products, released in 1999. DAZ Studio 1 wasn't released until 2005. I have Victoria 1 and can say that she works just fine in the current version of DAZ Studio, subject to the limitations that she always had, of course. (I had to crop things a bit to honour the forum TOUs, since, unlike more recent models, Vicky loads fully nude, shameless old hussy). So, as Vicky says, turning to all the other content in the store, "Hey, if I can do it, you can do it!".

OK Thanks for the fast response guys. My question was mainly asked in reference to the Nana chibi model that I would like to be able to use as an art reference. For some reason all the chibi type models seem to be for much older versions. I wonder why no one has made any more. I suppose I could once I figure out how to do rigging.

    Thanks again.

Well, there are a great many models or variants that have been created over the years, and some have caught on, others less so. Generally there tends to be a flurry of activity and content creation following a new release, that eventually dies down, leaving only a relatively small number of fans holding on. Much of the content remains available, but little new activity or content creation occurs thereafter, with the attention shifting to newer models. There are notable exceptions, with Victoria 4 being perhaps the best example. There has not only been a ton of content created for that model, but new content is still being produced today by some. A less extreme example is the even older Aiko 3, which developed a huge fanbase, so to speak, and remains popular with many to this day, although content creation for her is largely sporadic and confined to free content.
