Hair Shopping: Short Renders vs. Long Renders?

I'm shopping for good hair styles with relatively short render times. Is there a way to tell, just by eyeballing a product page and its description, which styles aren't massive resources hogs?
Presumably styles that use painted-on hair textures (via transparencies) render quicker than those that require strand by strand renders -- but don't multiple transparencies require major number-crunching, too?

solid hairs without transparency render quicker but fibermesh uses more RAM loaded
So fibermesh hairs are different than solid hairs? Can someone point to an example of each, just for comparison?

Most hairs are trans based unless they actually state otherwise. I just picked out a couple that I own as examples.
The nearest style I have in normal hair is this one
