Ok, I cant understand this.
I load one of the light presets. And all the lights seem to load...at her feet.
is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? As you can see from the screen cap...all the lights come in on the floor.

Distant lights don't have an actual location, just a direction, so the indicators load at the zero point.

So, its suppose to load like that?
All light presets are loading like that...is that normal for all the light presets?

What do you mean by 'preset'?

A light set (free or purchased set or one included in a set of some sort) or the default lights from the Create menu or toolbar?

The newly created ones will all load at (0,0,0)...the origin point...if the 'Apply Default Settings' is the choice on the Create dialog box.

The 'Apply actie viewport transforms' will put the light in the same spot you are looking from.

The light sets included with Studio... they all come in at her feet.
They do not seem to be placed where...they would actually light the scene.

Consequently my confusion. I would think that a light set that says its to be "moonlight" would be...higher up rather than at her feet.
I was thinking that perhaps There was a fault or I was loading them wrong...or something.

    Hi Dark,
    Yes its normal.
Think of Daz Lights like real world lights.

Distant lights are like the sun. They shine from the edge of world but its marker is positioned directly in the centre of the scene as default in most presets. You can move it where you want to though, but only rotation will affect the way it shines.

Uber Environment lights do not have directionality and are similar to an IBL or HDR light in Poser, also they are usually located at the centre of a scene in a preset.

Spotlights and point lights are co-ordinate dependant and will shine from their point of origin and will not usually be located centre scene in a preset.

To change your lights its best to use the scene tab to select each light.

Yep, they are all loading correctly.

One UberEnvironment light...it loads at the origin and provides a full environmental light...think of the all encompassing effect of the sky.

The 3 distant lights were explained earlier...so they are correctly loaded.

You can move 'em, if you don't like 'em there (I don't either). I always move 'em to be near the camera so I can tell what angle they are coming in at. I find it hard to intuit that when they are all clumped at the base of the scene.

Ok so they load in 0 and I then have to place them.
I was thinking something was wrong with DS. I am use to light sets loading in place. That was why I was confused.

I tried the firey genesis scene and I kept getting her very orange, not like the preview. Till I zoomed out and found all these lights at her feet. I moved them up and it seemed to be better.

o.0...so even though they are at her feet...or rather the indicators are at her feet, they still light the scene correctly?

Also...in poser I use a Dome for IDL....will I need this with DS?

For the types of light here the position doesn't matter, for spot lights and point lights (and the AoA Advacned lights and omnifreaker uberLights) it does. There's no need to move distant lights, unless their avatars are in the way.

No, you don't need a dome for environment lighting - you can use one, with a shader that emits light, but the actual environment lights don't need a dome (uberEnvironment loads with one, but it's just to show the way the map is positioned and won't render at all).

AH. so point lights and spots are pretty much like in poser. I move them to get the affect I want or light (such as a candle or lamp) effect. But the distant lights I do not need to move.

So I do not need something like BBs eviro dome? I can do the IDL without a dome now...

Correct. Only 'Image Based Lights' use a dome/sphere. :-)

...and both UberEnvironment and Iray include a dome for IBL so you don't have to make one yourself, unless you really want to.

Spotlights, point lights and linear point lights should not be loading at 0,0 when loaded from a light set.

The fiery genesis scene should have 2 spotlights off in opposite corners.

Yes those are there too. But there were lights at her feet too.
I keep trying to get it to render and look like the preview and...its not going too well....she comes out completely orange.
