Rookie User 4.8 Public Beta Rendering with Iray, screenshot of setup provided. Experiencing super long render times (going on 10 hour)

Hello fellow Daz 4.8 Beta users, The screenshot hopefully will say it all, what the heck am I doing that makes it render for so long. and the render itself is not exactly ready for this forum's tos, but it was stuck at 14 percent with iray iterations at 38 for hours The clock that counts how long it is rendering is still counting as i type this. Anyone know how to help?

First, the Iray render engine is a progressive render engine and will render until you either stop it manually, or until one of the "stop points" set in the advanced render settings is reached.
That said, if you are stuck at iteration 35 for 10 hours, it is safe to say that the render has crashed.
If it has crashed, CPU usage is usually running at 50%, where normally it would run at 100%.
I'd recommend you stop the render; most likely DS will crash in the process.
This is a problem that happens to almost everyone who has rendered with Iray at some point (I got stuck several times already :-)).

Of the failing scenes we have been given, they all appear to be related to the same bug and involve multiple intersecting planes with transmaps. Where the camera is located, what angle you hit it from with the camera, and potentially how much video ram you has all make a difference as to whether it will exhibit that behavior, but in the end it still comes down to that bug. We are waiting for an NVIDIA fix for it.

Ok thanks for the response. Hopefully in the form of a 4.8 update? is there a bug page for daz or nvidia concerning iray for daz? And one more question, is there an update button I can check inside daz 4.8?

Yes, there will be an update version. There are also other fixes for errors in it, also some stuff from nVidea, as DAZ_Sppoky mentioned further down in that thread. We haven't heard anything from the DAZlers about when that update will happen. Could be days or weeks, or months. ;-P

If you still have "Public Beta" checked in your DIM, then you will automatically see when the next update for the Beta becomes available. There also is usually an announcement in the Commons section of the forum about new versions. There's no update switch within DS, I'm afraid.

There are several threads in the Commons section of the forum. Here's the current Beta version's main thread:

As for bugs, it's best to report them directly to DAZ, so they can fix them.

render times will be down to a number of things, surface properties like highly reflective or PC specs which you don't mention.

Maybe I should create a new thread for this but here goes... I am using an Acer Laptop model number E1-510P-2671. This has an intel celeron quad core processor N2920 (2M cache, 2.0 GHz), Intel HD Graphics, and 8 GB DDR3 L Memory. Yes, I know this computer has no right running daz3d at all but i just cant afford to make a good desktop.

Can anyone recommend a good rendering setup with Iray for 4.8 for a low end laptop? I am looking for a render time under 3 hours but with nice Iray quality. I tried using the optix checkbx for an added boost but the render just sat at rendering for three hours while i went out. Thanks for any help!

What kind of budget can you afford?

Because, as far as it goes, the chance of a laptop being able to out perform a desktop, is slim. At least in the price range I'm imagining....the under $500 range.

I have some of the components...two small hard drives coming to 160gb, a case, 21.5 1920x1080 led monitor, mouse, keyboard, and that's it. I have about 285 to play with. At the moment it just isn't there yet. What about adding ram to my laptop?

Unfortunately, most of the laptops I've seen with similar specs max out at 8 GB...and so does that one.

Doing a quick pricing run at Newegg...a Gigabyte motherboard, AMD FX-6300 CPU, 8 GB of RAM, a 600W power supply and 1 TB harddrive comes to about $360...so you are almost there. You can add in an 'entry level' (to Iray) Nvidia video card for about another $75.

Awesome thaks for the part tips. I was thinking of getting the geforce 7501 something or other but is that what i need or can it be less crazy? Im curious what cheap Nvidia graphics card you would say can finish Iray renders better than my laptop, you say 75 bucks? that sounds better than 150.

    This one...

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500368

Last time I checked it was a bit cheaper...it must have been one of Newegg's sales. But at $80, it's still pretty cheap. It's pretty much the lowest level card I'd get for Iray. No, it's not going to beat out a 900 series, but with 4 GB of memory it will whip ANY integrated graphics for GPU rendering...and many other cards, too.

ahhh thank you for this. I've been looking for card that was good but nice and cheap. Awesomeness.
