Should I get Bryce?

I was thinking of getting Bryce to use with DAZ but I am not sure if it would be a good purchase for me or not. I am not an artist, I am a gamer who would like to create scenes and stuff for the games I run.

    What sort of games.

If they are going to include DAZ 3D mesh then you will need a Game Developers License.

Not video games but table top games that use dice and paper, like D&D.
The stuff I make wouldn't be for sale or anything, just props for the game.

Ah OK. Bryce is primarily sold as a landscape program, although those of us who really use it know that it does far more than that.

    What do you mean?

How high is the learning curve? If it has tutorials like DAZ then it should be easy.

I have literally thousands of textures in png and jpeg formats that I have downloaded over the last year for other art programs, would these be usable in Bryce?

I wonder if they are also usable in DAZ?

You can certainly use your own .jpgs to make custom textures in Bryce - I've done so many times and even have a products for Bryce in the store made entirely with my own textures. You can also use Bryce's built procedural texture editor to create a variety of textures and Bryce comes with a good selection of procedural textures already. .

What Cohole means is that although Byrce is primarily marketed as a landscape generator program you certainly don't need to use it just for that. For example I have done a lot of images created with Bryce that aren't landscape scenes, using other types of props - figures, buildings, other object types etc.

Bryce has a variety of light types so you can render scenes of any type, both indoor and outdoor. It has primitive shapes and metaballs that you can use to build your own props (note though Bryce is not a modelling program in the traditional sense of using lines, vertices and faces to create objects) in addition to the ability to generate rocks, stones, landscapes, skies etc. .the only limitation in Bryce is your imagination:)

The interface (in my opinion) is far easier to learn than other programs on the market. I have some tutorials for beginners (see the link below - ) which might help, and there are also loads of other links in the Bryce forum.

I often use DAZ Studio with Bryce, importing props and figures from DAZ Studio into Bryce and then completing the scene and rendering the image from Bryce.

You might like to have a look at the Gallery section - scroll down and type 'Bryce' into the search - if you have a good look through a few pages of images you'll see quite a variety, from landscapes to still life, figures, cars....quite an assortment.

FYI I purchased Bryce last night. I am looking forward to working with it... I sampled it earlier today and it is seems pretty comprehensive, though I still need to go through the tutorials.
    A couple questions:

    1. Can Bryce open *.obj files and apply textures to the different parts.
I ask this because I found a site with lots of .obj files that I can put into DAZ3D but I don't have any good textures to apply to them and manipulating the color editor is slow and I have no idea what I am doing... Plus that only changes the overall color of said objects and no textures are applied..

    2. When I rendered my test scene it would only render it properly from the default view. Whenever I tried the top down or by changing the view manually the render looked like a 2 bit (vice 8 bit to 64 bit graphics) graphic. What causes this?

    Edit: One more question:

3: I got the Bryce 7.1 Golden Lighting but when I tried to install it through DIM it says there is no path for it. How do I fix this?
Please note that I changed all my DAZ3D content paths to my F: drive.

If need be I can manually install but, how?

In DIM go to Settings > Applications and add the path to Bryce.exe. After that DIM will be able to install Bryce plugins/content.

    oh yeah, duh....
Makes sense as the install for Bryce told me it didn't work with DAZ....
    Thank you!

Now hopefully someone will help me with questions 1 and 2.

Bryce doesn't install things the same way as DS once you have installed them you will need to bring them into the Bryce library.
    Yes Bryce will recognise objs,
It has a very complicated texture room but you can use jpg the results will depend on the jpg.
To be honest you are better off asking questions in the Bryce forum.
Sorry I don't know the answer to question 2.
I find Bryce limited because its only 32 bit, its pretty much been forgotten by Daz not been updated for years, I can't even get it to import 1 genesis 2 figure.

Yes as Scorpio says, do come and visit us in the Bryce forum. We are ver friendly over there and don't bite (much) :coolsmirk:

You will find lots of people there who will be willing to help you get to grips with Bryce, rather than mainly just me in this forum.

BTW I am not quite certain what you are meaning with question 2 . but if you wqant to change your render angle to are better off using the camera controls, the 3 above the track ball, or the track ball itself.

BTW Horo has made a very useful PDF about installing stuff into Bryce. Get it here http://www.horo.ch/docs/mine/pdf/BryceContent_v4.pdf

As well as Eva's tuts David Brinnen has done literally dozens of video tuts on various aspects of Bryce as you can see from our tutorial list here
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/2839/

David is also our acknowledged resident guru on the Bryce DTE (Deep Texture Editor)

That is a couple of times I have read this and yet I bring Genesis figures across all the time. The image here has two trees from the tree lab, an HDRI backround, a terrain and the figure is Genesis 2 with hair, dress and shoes brought into the scene using the Bryce bridge. I haven't done anything else to the figure but normally I will put the skin through the texture editor, also the hair and the eyes if going closer.
