To Install or not Install...that is the question

What is the difference between installing and not installing a package?  

When I buy and download a package using Install Manager the packages show up in smart content with a little segmented circle and a down arrow in the top right corner.  

If I "Install" the package (inside Daz Studio by right clicking and selecting Install) the circle goes away and I get the "New" overlay.  

Howevr, in either case I can use the package. It seems there is no difference whether I install or not.

If the thumbnail is in colour then the item is installed, if it has the circled triangle icon it is not installed through DS itself - but that won't stop it from working. The icon is just for information.
