help retrieving .zip files from renderosity - NONE of the existing threads r helping

I need help, please :) I've downloaded .zip files from renderosity and can't find how to bring them into Daz 4.6. I hear tons of conflicting answers about content folder, Runtime folder, My Documents, and My Library and I'm freakin' goin' crazy! I'd like to save all of them on my external hard drive. I've been told to start a Studio folder then content then Runtime. I can unzip them but then what? And considering I'm placing the .dsf (or whatever the product of the unzip is) file into the right folder ... then what? File --> Import in Daz? Nothing is working for me. Please, assume you're explaining this to a child or a caveman - I know computers more than the average person but I'm brand new to these programs. :(

I've looked through all the threads dealing with this, and they haven't helped thus far - or they speak in so much jargon they're forgetting that people who ask these kinds of questions are new, and won't understand answers so full of info you think newbies should already know.

Is there a kind soul who can help with this?

it kind of depends what is in the zip file.
unzipping it to a folder and looking your best cause of action
also depends if you are on Windows or Mac
    for Poser format content,
if it is windows and you get a folder called "runtime" in there, just copy it into the folder in your library which has one called runtime in it and choose merge.
Mac I believe you need to move induvidual files and sub folders as merge overwrites stuff.
a dsa, dsf, duf file can go anywhere so long as the file in the data folder is in the right place I think, someone might know, I do not use studio that much, mostly Poser format stuff in Carrara.

Wow, that was speedy, thx Wendy! I'm on Windows, and I don't have Poser.

if it is windows and you get a folder called "runtime" in there, just copy
it into the folder in your library which has one called runtime in it and
    choose merge.

what is "the folder in your library?" What is "your library?" How do you "merge?" Not trying to be annoying at all, just trying to understand.

I cannot say exactly as it depends on how you installed studio
the default path is documents/Daz 3D my library I think
mine is on an external drive under Daz content because I used it with Carrara and Poser on another computer
not using the default path I am unsure where it goes, actually I think DS4 might use public documents so probably confusing you more,
Hopefully one of the admins will pop in, they know more about the standard way to do stuff
you could use windows search to find runtime if all else fails and browse to folder location

    Fast questions...
    1. What is the Name and Path of your Default DAZ Studio content folder?
    2. What Operating System are you using, XP, OSX, Win7, or Win8 and the bit? IE Win7 64bit.

Thanks so much, everyone. I thought I'd searched well enough, but that thread helps

    I'm on Windows 8, 64bit

I'm not sure of my Default DAZ Studio content folder. In My Documents, there are 2 folders named DAZ 3D - one has Install Manager, the other has Studio / My Library (along with Render Library). Plus there's another one in My Documents named My DAZ 3D Library, and in that one there's a Runtime folder. So all the different folders to choose from and none of them have a content folder - confusing the heck out of me. I'm learning, though ... slowly!

    Thx for all your help!

So all the different folders to choose from and none of them have a content folder

You already found them. The term "content folder" is confusing a lot of people — in earlier versions of D|S the content folder was actually named "Content" and was stored in the D|S Program folder, then it was named "My Library" and was moved to your "My Documents" folder. Now we have the DIM which by default — and ONLY by default, this can be changed if you need to — uses a "My DAZ3D Library" folder in your computer's public "My Documents" folder. All of these are your content folder and any or all of them may contain a Runtime folder.

    Confused yet? We are...

Sweet! That's great, I had a feeling I was confusing myself looking at Daz3 and 4.5 info, and when I find 4.6 info on this subject it's for Mac or Win 7 or something like that is always messing me up.

So if I wanted to take the route of using external storage device, would I move My DAZ 3D Library to that device? Would I unzip and put the outcome into Runtime and never touch them after that? Would moving My DAZ 3D Library out of My Documents create problems down the line? Like the next time I get new content from Daz official site?

Almost definitely, if you do it that way. The DIM will still be plonking stuff in your old "My Documents" location, so you must change that setting first to your new content location. Then tell DIM to uninstall everything, then — and not before — move your old content folder, which should now contain only stuff without DIM installers, e.g. your Renderosity items. Make sure the D|S content settings match where you've actually put everything in the new location, then it'll be safe to tell DIM to re-install.

(Hope I got all that straight, I've never actually neeeded to do it myself.)

Are you using DIM for your normal Installs? If so can I get a Screen of your DIM Installation path. Like this.
And your Content Directory Manager in DAZ Studio also shown below now.

Hopefully I don't need a re-install. I haven't done anything that should be undone, I hope. The only download I've done is for Daz4.6 and a couple Freebies off the site, so yes I've only used the Install Manager. Here's the log in a notepad file from the original download:

The "QProcess: Destroyed" warning can be ignored -- it often appears when installing software or plugins and isn't a problem.

Haven't seen the permissions warning before -- go to Settings (the gear icon) > Installation tab, right-click on the row for "My DAZ 3D Library", and select "Fix Installed File Registry". That will make sure there aren't errors in it. Note: After doing this you'll see one or more errors in the log saying "Error Reading Manifest" -- you can ignore those, that just means the particular item doesn't get installed to the Library folder (because it's software, a plugin, or non-DS/Poser content).

(I periodically delete everything in the log so I don't get confused by things I've already looked at before.)

If you have used DIM for all content installs your content is in C:Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library.
Your path in the DAZ Studio Content Directory Manager should Look like mine above.
You can Just take Rendo Runtime folders from a ZIP and Paste it in My DAZ 3D Library with Merge. That will place the content properly.
Please note NO content From RENDO will be SMART content you will need to use the Content Library Tab to find the content. Depending on the content Check in Poser Formats>My DAZ 3D Library>Figures and Props.

This is awesome, I've tested a couple unzips and put them in My DAZ 3D Library, and I can find them in the Content Library!

But I feel I did too much - for example I downloaded genesis giants for male and female, put the resulting .dsf files into:
    C:\Users\Public\Documents\My DAZ 3D Library\People\Genesis\Characters

Should I not go that deep into My DAZ 3D Library and organize them myself? Do I just toss all my unzipped goodies into Runtime or something like that? I'm unfamiliar with "merge," is that a broad term or a technical term - I don't see a merge command when I right click.

I'm so close to fully grasping this, you guys are a major help!

Since they're not smart content, do I settle all my posing first and then add those suckers, since they don't move with my figure's movements? Only smart content will move and stay fitted as I play with the posing? Am I wrong?

No that is wrong, for Genesis items just Select ALL inside the Content folder and Paste into My DAZ 3D Library. They too will go into the right places. Never add to any thing Deeper than My DAZ 3D Library. The Content is just that easy. Drop and Merge to the Top folder.

I'm on Win 8 - 64bit - and don't think I even have the morphs to use all the goodies I've grabbed. I'm trying to find out which morphs come with 4.6 - if any?

Your Correct the Basic Genesis Figure does not come with morphs, but the Gaint set should work if installed properly. I've never seen Win8 so I do not know if Merge is a option or not, it is in Win7.

I feel I'm more confused now than ever. There is no folder named "Content." There is no "ALL." There is no "installation" - just an unzip and move the files to My DAZ 3D Library. And I can indeed find them in the content library, but all it does is make the figure bigger, as if I were using "general scale" (no giant features). Not that this one thing is so important, but it'll help me grasp the entire process of bringing anything at all into the studio.

The CONTENT is the stuff you BUY, the DIM Zip Files have a Content folder as the Top level folder, when you Un-Zip them to a temp folder. I was thinking you were using some DIM Zip files.

A Content Folder is any folder with Items in it, the NAME can be anything like My DAZ 3D Library.

So you're using the same term for the unzipped folder (Content folder) as you are for My DAZ 3D Library (Content folder)? Move the content folder to the content folder? I understand Daz would prefer if we all just bought everything from the official site and used the Install Manager - and I'd be happy to do that if I had all the money to spend. But we all know that we all accrue a great deal of content that isn't from Daz official site. Why is it so difficult to introduce that material to the studio? Is Win 8 so unpopular that no one else out there uses it? I've scoured the threads that deal with this and my answers aren't in there - or they're filled with so much jargon and calling files and folders by the names they're known in other systems to the point it doesn't help me.

Hello friend, when purchasing products from Renderosity, on products page, there is product info read me file. Within read me file is installation instructions. At least for all the content I've purchased.

I had a bit of an issue, installing content when I first began. Specially .zip files. Very time consuming, but what I did was, use the windows search engine. Search for content already installed, in content library. I would type Erato hair for example. Search engine showed me folder location/path.

Another way you can do this is, right click on content, in content library pane, select browse to folder location. Hit the up arrow, path goes backwards to Daz 3D library, where one would install .zip files. Daz 3D library is content folder. Within this folder you have data, people, runtime, etc.... All daz/poser content goes to 3D library content folder. I did this until I was familiar/comfortable.

    Good luck friend.

I'm Doing a mini tut, All DIM Zip files have a FOLDER named Content in them. If you are not installing all the Files in them and ONLY the Runtime folder you are not installing all the Content (as in ITEMS).

Totally different things. Smart Content (when it works) lets you select a figure, prop, or clothes, and the Smart Content tab will show only the accessories or textures that go with that selected item. Think of it as an automatic content filter, unlike the Content Library tab which can show you every item of content you have installed. That's why it's "smart", nothing to do with posing.

If you're adding clothes that aren't moving with the figure, then you haven't fitted them properly. Select the clothes, right click on them in the Viewport, and you'll get a pop-up context menu with "Fit To..." about half-way down. Use this, and select the figure you want to fit the clothes to. There is also a "Fit To..." parameter in the Parameter tab under "General", which works the same way.

Does anyone know the thread where I asked (about three months ago) how to do this very same thing with a manual install? All this about the DIM process isn't telling me what I need to do, although I'm sure it's similar. I have files I need to put in DS but not sure what to do. Would I just make a separate folder under Runtime (in My Library) then extract all files and put them in that folder?

Just as I posted above, its Un-Zip to a Temp folder, Open the Folder, if it HAS a Content Folder open it, Now SELECT ALL every folder and file listed and do COPY. Go to the My Library or My DAZ 3D Library Folder, now DO PASTE, and MERGE. Your done. It's that easy. No Folders to make Nothing. The Paste and Merge puts all the files in the places they belong.

That's the problem- they put them in places I can't find. A hair, for example- not showing up in hair. When I go to C directory and type in the hair, it shows the product, I click on it, it opens up the studio with the hair floating out in the viewport, but doesnt show where the darned thing is hidden so I can put it on someone. If I make a folder for this hair so I know where it is, would I just put it under My Library, or My library/Runtime- would it make a difference?

I'm not a Fan of moving folders in DS. In the older days that was a very fast way to BREAK your content so it never worked again until you put it all back just right. The new DUF format is much more forgiving but the DATA folder should be pretty much left alone. The Poser content (any thing in a Runtime, and some DS stuff if it has a dummy loader in the runtime) Also has some rules but much can be moved around also. I'm not here to explain how to get content in just that perfect spot (yet), I'm focused on just getting the content installed properly the first time so it works as shipped from the sites.

If it has Metadata I want it to show in Smart Content, if it does not I want it to show in the folders the Artist lists in the Info/Read me files. After that if you move on and wish to learn other ways of arranging the content yourself at least I know you had it installed right the first time. I myself prefer the Category feature because the files stay at Default install but I have a folder with all content placed just where I want it. Nothing breaks except the Database once in a VERY long while but the tools to back up and restore are built in. I like that option the best.

I was just getting ready to ask about moving folders around. Or if content library can sort by name. When content starts to build up in library, can be overwhelming sometimes searching for items. What helps me is, I notepad each character/item I obtain, location, then print, put in binder alphabetically.
