The cloud. Hype! Doesn't anyone realize what a cloud is made of? Vapor! Behind the smoke and vapor, it's just a fancy way of saying Shared Hosting. Your stuff on someone else's server, with their security that you have to depend on. Not that it's either good or bad, but just that it's nothing more fancy than that, really. OK, maybe also that it's distributed computing, and redundant servers. Also not new things. Just the name is new.

And that makes my observation that a cloud error causes errors here at the Hosted site invalid? Sort of reinforces it if you ask me. Just saying....

Yeah, Daz has no control - just like with my Google Drive, if Google messes up, there's not an thing I can do but cry. At least with local storage/backup, if it goes down I can fix it with a run to Best Buy or Frys. :-S

When the cloud works, it rocks. When it fails, it rots. :blank:

Well, the control that DAZ3D had was choosing whether or not to use it.

I don't like the idea of my data being somewhere else. And I hate even more the idea of my software being somewhere else, which is a direction that Microsoft seems to be going with things like their Office product. If a hub somewhere, or a server or even cable owned by Comcast goes down, I can't write or read a Word document? No thanks, I'll just stick with the Office 2007 product I have, right here on my hard drive, with a CD ready to reinstall it if I need to.

The whole "software as a service" thing grates on me. Look at what Adobe has with the Cloud versions of their creative stuff, yikes! :bug: Some days I'm really tempted to throw my hat into the Open Source ring and start spending some time working on Gimp and Blender, to improve them to the point where they can better compete with for-pay software (and free folks from the tyranny of RENTED software).

If I buy something I bloody well BUY it. I expect it to work like it says on the tin because I forked money up for it. Grrr!

    Sorry, rant over.. :red: :red:

I just discovered my Hulu Plus subscription gives me access to the entire Criterion Collection! :bug: :bug:

I now have 18 movies in my queue, including a couple of Godzilla flicks, some fancy Japanese samurai movies, and a pile of art-house films I've always wanted to see... :cheese: :cheese:

Plenty to keep me entertained for the weekend! Will buy microwave popcorn out of the machine downstairs. :)

Still drizzling here, but it's slowing down - should be able to go out without getting drenched in an hour or so. :)

I'm all for people earning an honest wage selling reasonable products, but I'm not about infinite corporate greed to drain the coffers of the common man to feed the fat-cat corporate pigs! I know, that sounded like an anarchist rant, but the more I see of this kind of thing the more it makes me hissy! :snake: :snake:

I think if I throw the switch on this, I'm going to get the current Gimp codebase and turn it into a more capable program for painting. It's handing of Photoshop brushes is pretty awful, the UI needs some rethinking by someone with actual human factors experience,, but the underlying code appears to be pretty stable. I'd just branch it and call my version LoachPaint (heh)!

On the Blender side, I'd finish learning Python and finally write a Poser importer. If I could cleanly import 90% of my Poser content into Blender, I'd go ahead and learn the UI. :gulp: It'd be a multi-year project as I'd want it to work with conforming clothes, hair, and smart props.. one heck of a development effort! :ahhh: But I'd end up famous (lol)!

I could actually keep writing and still have time to engage in some open-source development. I'd have to put music composition on the back burner, but I find myself 100% uninspired to compose the past month.

    Argh, just.. argh. :-S

What lucky Loach you is. 30 yards from my place I got... umm... more yard.

 Well, there's a strip mall next door - the Whataburger, a sub shop, urgent medical care place, massage parlor :red: and a Valero that sells groceries and beer, then across the street is the bbq truck, a Subway, liquor store, and a Jack in the Box, 2 blocks to another corner grocery, a Pizza Hut, and a Mexican restaurant.

It's kind of nice on days like this, no long distance run to get basics. :)

When Woolyloach says there's a "strip mall" next door, I'm not exactly sure what he means. ;-)

    Rented software?

I only know of [currently] two companies that do that. "The Foundry" with Nuke, Mari, and the rest of their (Pricey) stuff...
And Eyeon's Fusion (At least the last time I checked. Damn... Last time I was there - back when v5 was new - I was so confused about the purchasing options I just left. All these fancy words and stuff, and from what I could tell you had to pay annually just to keep using it - that was the extent to which it confused me!!)

At least MAXON had a nice way of selling C4D. Pay for it once at normal price, or pay a very small amount (Studio is like $700 then) once a year and every update and/or new release is free - which is typically every year or so, usually in the same month every time ^^
Can cancel out of it at any time too and that doesn't affect the editions you bought during that time. Never locks you out just because you couldn't pay or canceled out. Pretty interesting o3o

Also an amusing screenshot I took while playing AoEIII with some friends (We REALLY wanted to play Age of Mythology instead, but nuuuu. Kept insisting we needed to update the game to go onto the servers, and clicking "Update Game" said our game was up to date! *holds the disc in my hand* And reinstalling it didn't do anything either e3e)

*edit* Checked Fusion's website again. Don't see anything about "renting" anymore. Guess they either changed that or I was remembering wrong.

Still don't understand what the two purchasing options are or how they're different :B

The Foundry stuff isn't necessarily rented, but you do need to be part of their maintenance programme to get upgrades as far as I am aware. However dropping that doesn't kill the application in its current state.

there's commonly 24 vertebrae, according to a wiki page on spines. i wonder if its the same for faeries. how many ribs do i have? is it 13?

heard of c4 vertebrae before from watching Bones.

ISTR 12 pairs of ribs for humans, 13 pairs for some of the other great apes.

    thanks!

collar bones aren't considered a rib, pretty sure. The normal human rib cage contains 24 ribs or 12 pairs. And that is just the rib cage itself. Many medical sites can confirm that for you if you check.

i can kinda feel my collar bone over my neck ribble. can't really feel rib sections from touching my back, on my side can feel the ridges.
