3DS to Carrara to Daz Studio?

I've downloaded a car model in .3DS format, but both the converters I've tried—Poseray and Autodesk's .FBX converter—produce a lumpy, distorted mess that looks as if it's been in a high speed crash. Of course the textures, materials, and scale are messed up too, but that could conceivably be addressed.

Since Carrara is presently on sale, I'd buy it for the sole purpose of converting car models into something that would look good in DS...but only if it was capable of doing so. Otherwise it would be $45 wasted, since I doubt like heck I'd use it for anything else. I understand Poser can do the job too, but I have no interest in learning it, let alone paying for it.

Can anyone comment on the quality I could expect from a 3DS > Carrara > DS import/export chain?

Sounds like you may of bought it from Turbosquid and so since they offer a conversion service as part of the price of a lot of models they sell I'd turn it over to them as they have a lot more experienced 3D software users on their staff to know what to do. If they can't convert it to your satisfaction you should return the model for a refund.

Turbosquid? Perish forbid! wink Some of their prices are downright insane: I could probably buy a toaster that actually toasts bread cheaper than I could buy a toaster model.

No, this was an Alfa Romeo Spider from CadNave (http://www.cadnav.com/3d-models/model-11290.html).

OK, I downloaded it and I converted it from 3DS to FBX using Autodesk FBX Converter 2013 (FBX 2013.3) and the problem is that is is a very low polygon model and that is why the fenders look all crumpled. You could take it into Blender and subdivide the model and apply smoothing to the areas that look 'crumpled' as the basic shape is correct.

Aha, I guess that explains it. Thanks for investigating and replying, nonesuch (tips virtual hat).

Did the same with Blender and all I can say is good thing it was free.  The problem isn't so much that it is low poly but that it is just horribly modelled.
