Reflection on Eyes: Inconsistent Results

I've done a TON of renders. Sometimes, the eyes light up great in lighting. Then, in similar lighting, they look totally dead.

I don't get it. I've had the lights be bright and otherwise. Changed eyes to be glossy, messed with the cornea eye bulge...but occasionally, eyes are simply dead.

Any thoughts on how to get consistent, realistic eye reflection?

Iray or 3Delight renders? Is there anything in the scene for the eyse to reflect? Some characters include reflections painted on to the eye surface, which may be confusing the issue.

    I've been using Iray.

There are always lights in the scenes. I would've thought they'd cause the eyes to light up or at least catch what lighting is in there.

I am not completely sure but would say, that these reflections Richard is talking about are only painted to the eye texture. So the are not reflective, which is ok for bright scenes. For dark scenes I try to catch something by manipulating the eye geometry. Shaping tab - Eye Cornea bulge. I had only 2 times success but it is worth a try

I do not use iray but for unbiased rendering you should strip out any baked in reflection maps. To get good eye reflections just make sure at least one light is pointed at the figures face. Sometimes it is necesary to use a catch light for this.
