Why do some objects look like they are covered in slime? (Solved)

Sometimes I render an image and some object in it looks like it is covered in slime.
I have sometimes been able to fix this problem by going back and applying a material to the slimey object. Then, when I render again, it comes out properly, not covered in slime.
But there are some objects that have no material settings to apply - at least none can be found for them in the content manager. So I'm stuck with the slimy look.
Is there a way to get rid of the slimey look without applying a material to the object?

Is it in IRAY Shader and what are the Topcoat settings for the shader?
In the default surfaces tab for items....
There is a dropdown labeled "Lighting Model"
Plastic
Metallic
Skin
Glossy (Plastic)
Matte
Glossy (Metallic)
Try changing it to matte
Thanks for your help, both of you.
RKane_1, I don't know anything about shaders yet because I am a nubie. So I don't even know how to find out these parameters you are asking me about. I suspect that, in this instance at least, the object I'm having a problem with does not have anything to do with IRay. I think it is too old a model.
JamesJB, your suggestion appears to have done the trick in this instance. "This instance", by the way, is the image I am here attaching. The lunar surface is something I picked up from ShareCG. Indeed, it was set to "Plastic" and I changed it to "Matte", which fixed it, unless my ignorance is fooling me into thinking it fixed it.
That shiny glossy moon was pretty crazy looking. Looks like that fixed it up nicely.
