I'm not getting the extreme affect you had (using default iray settings), but you don't have any bevels along the inner angles - where the "serifs" meet the upright of the I shape alonmg the curve of the arch - and if I add some theer is does reduce the shading artefacts at the ends of the sides a bit. I also tried adding a bit more bevelling on the upright join, but I don't think that had much effect.
Your issue is still the smoothing angle. Because you have a bevelled edge, it is calculating the smoothing based on each of the edges in the bevel.
When the angle at the joint between surface a and surface b is equal to or less than x the program interperates it as a curve.
Your problem is the angles for the bevelling are messing with how the model is displayed
A dirty solution could be to add a subdivision cut right next to the end of the bevel to keep the smoothing away from the main faces.
OK so basically what people are saying is I shouldnt bevel? I need the beveling in the edges as the finished reder will be of an ancient structure so there needs to be wear on the edges. Is there a better way to do this?
