Computer can't find files

Hi,

My main desktop computer is having problems.  I'm trying to decide if I should get it fixed or buy a new one.  Theres one problem.  I'm worried I'll loose a lot of in progress work, and characters I re-use.  If I transfer the files to a new computer.  Daz has become rather finicky about file placement in recent years.  And I know my old computer has files that are slightly screwed up.

Ok that was the overview.  Now on to the question.  I have a laptop.  Thats newer than my desktop.  And I did a clean install of Daz and all the associated files using Daz3DIM.  So I decided to do a test.  I moved a Daz scene file over to the laptop.  And I get a warning that Daz can't find some files and a block figure appears.  See attached picture.  Now Daz will sometimes ask you to search and find files that it cant locate.  My question(s) are

1.  Is there a way to fix this?

2.  Why won't it always allow me to search for missing files?

3.  Is there a way to force Daz to look for missing files?

IF I get a new computer.  I've thought of ways that might get things working, Create a partition in the new computer, and transfer all the data intact from the old computer.  This might allow me to keep working with old files.  But I'm just guessing.  Its going to be trial and error, If I can't get daz to locate the files the way its supposed to.  It may lead to the loss of all older files, and anything I've worked on recently, but hadn't finished.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

What files were reported as missing? Some are generated by DS when the scene is saved or when you save an asset (imports and new content) so those won't be on the new system simply by reinstalling your base content. It's also possible, if you used non-default locations, that the path settings are not correct on the laptop.

  • See picture of what I'm seeing.

I've been using Daz since 2007.  I've always used the Daz installers, and more recently DIM.  But this has gone through maybe 4 or 5 computers, where I just did a complete transfer of everything from one computer to the next.  So essentially, the file structure on the new computer is 10 years old with all the bumps and bruises that entails.  The file scene I showed you is just V4 with a few clothing props.  Very simple, no lights or anything.  The only thing Daz can find as you see is the hair.

I understand My files structure isnt up to modern standards.  What I cant figure out is why Daz won't even ask "Do you want to try and locate this file?"  It does do that sometimes.  These files are on my laptop.  I know that for a fact.  If it would let me help it.  There would be a chance to rescue some of what might be lost.  Which involves dozens of original characters and storylines.

The AutoAdapted files are the ones DS creates, so they won't be there by virtue of having isntalled the content the dazstudio in front of the Runtime in the list of OBJ files suggsets there may have been a nested content directory on your old system and that that is confusing the saved file. Can you load the base content new from the library on your current system?

  • I'm not sure what you mean.  This laptop should be a perfect instal.  I mean I did a clean instal here, using the DIM.  Theres no third party 3d content.  I know my content libraries are screwed up on the desktop computer (Thats malfunctioning).  But this laptop was an effort to straighten things out.   Which is why I'm surprised its having trouble opening this file.  Except for the outfit V4 is wearing.  Everything is Daz purchased and installed.  I'd think that would be the base install.  Am I wrong?

If there were nested paths on the old machine then DS may have added an unneeded folder to the relative path in the svaed scene file, and that won't work on the new machine.

I have Dax studio 8.x. I just got a new computer. I copied to an external drive my library, the files found in app data, in program data and in public docs. Also to be on the safe side I exported the data to just be sure. I didn't need to. I have built my own categories for years. I kept the structure the same. I have three drive letters c, f, g. I installed my saved copy of Daz 8 and the other saved 8  plugins. Then, I substituted the previously saved files. When I installed Daz and it asked on the second screen to overwrite, etc. I guessed no and that worked. Every category showed up perfectly.  Before I substituted the saved files, I renamed those installed by the fresh Daz installation as library old, for example.

@Paula Sanders  "I installed my saved copy of Daz 8 "

You sure you don't mean Poser 8? The latest version of Daz Studio is 4.9.3.166.

  • Ok.  Thanks.  If I can think of any other questions I'll get back to you

I was talking about DAZ 8. I don't use 9 out of choice. So I wrote how I did it without any issue assuming that the steps for 9 would be similar. I wrote I saved all the DAZ files so I could do this if necessary because unless saved, I would have had to use 9 and I didn't want to.

There is no DAZ Studio 8, there is  4.8.x.

From your description, it sounds like you copied the files in C:/Users/YOURNAME/AppData/Roaming/DAZ 3D/Studio 4 over to the new machine?  I know Gen X2 and some other content puts files there, but the configuration files will point to the wrong location for your Library.  I would try sorting by date and copying the newest files  (not the subdirectories) to another location and start Studio to recreate those files.  You can then re-add your content folders in the Studio Library window...
